Earlier this week in The Globe and Mail proud to be quoted on the power of women in investment strategy. In my experience, women consider their investments deeply, "relating it to how they want to design or build their life in the future [rather] than just drilling down on which stock is winning or losing today.” Despite this reality, women still face "unspoken bias" in the world of capital markets. I had the pleasure of joining a TAP Network event last night with Charlyne Fothergill and some other incredible folks. We spoke about the importance of Pay Transparency and the associated impacts that has on the Performance Review process. Pay Transparency is required in BC and will soon be required in Ontario as well. A big benefit of Pay Transparency is to reduce the Gender Wage Gap. However some research showed that after Pay Transparency, women were getting paid less than men as they negotiate less aggressively. The concept and intention of Pay Transparency is clear - the question is how can we build stronger processes to ensure better equity and equality for all people getting paid at a company? As companies prepare to handle this, there's a lot of new processes that need to be built out. Some questions we talked through include: - Pay is only part of the compensation package - how do we measure equity across other the entire compensation package? - How do you setup internal comms so employees know where they are, and what they're working towards? - How do you prepare managers to answer questions about where an employee sits on a specific pay band? - How do you create pay bands that incentivize people to continue working at your company? One area that's really relevant to me is how does future performance impact future compensation? What processes are in place to measure that and how much transparency is there between a manager and their direct reports? It's a problem we're actively building a solution for with HypeDocs - and one I'm really excited to keep exploring! I'd love to know your thoughts on pay transparency and performance and how it impacts you whether you're a People person, manager, employee or passive bystander

It's Monday, and today is my #AdvertisingSoWhite? reminder to you if you work in #CanadianMarketing or #advertising. Why is DEI change coming so slowly to an ostensibly progressive industry like advertising? Why is "white majority" still the default setting for the work we do when most of the brands we serve get most of their customers from Canadian cities that have (or soon will) racialized minority majorities? How can we fix this imbalance? We reasoned our best way forward as an industry, was to change the brief. The creative brief. The research brief. The media brief. Last week, Alexis Trudel and I were in Quebec City at the Beneva headquarters for our 18th quarterly business review presentation! Reflecting on how far we’ve come, I remember when we first landed this account six years ago. I was so excited that I went for coffee with a former CEO from a large agency I worked at to share the news. He gave me a piece of advice I’ve never forgotten: "It’s one thing to land high-profile clients; it’s another to keep them." Now, I’d like to share a few insights on how we’ve managed to maintain this partnership—despite not having a fancy logo: 1. We were given a chance. 2. We’re results-driven and passionate about what we do. 3. Our team is senior and hands-on. 4. Low staff turnover: we’ve ended only three partnerships over six years to keep quality high. 5. We limit our client list and avoid multi-tasking. 6. Fewer meetings, more focus: we leave room for deep, inspired work. 7. We use an FTE model, not a percentage-of-spend approach. 8. There’s a strong cultural fit between us and the client. Finally, we’ve been entrusted with multiple Beneva projects over the years—thank you for this ongoing opportunity!
