This webinar will share the results of recent collaborations between the Composites Research Network and the Canadian Light Source (Canada’s national synchrotron facility) to develop new tools to characterize fiber-level defects and better understand how they form. Characterizing fiber-level defects can be very difficult, as they cannot typically be resolved by conventional x-ray or ultrasonic imaging. However, fiber microstructure can be imaged in 3D using advanced x-ray imaging techniques like synchrotron-based computed tomography (CT). Niobium-Titanium alloy (Nb-Ti) has shown strong market potential in fuel cell fabrication. A study with the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and the University of Waterloo found that deposited Nb-Ti alloy/Pt coatings on SS316L plates increased in-plane electrical conductivity by 42.6% and thermal conductivity by 3.5%, surpassing the US Department of Energy's technical targets. This indicates the viability of Nb-Ti alloy/Pt coated SS316L bipolar plates for fuel cell applications. ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filters to Be Added as Class 1 Medical Device Under Zentek’s Medical Device Establishment Licence   Guelph, ON – November 27, 2024, Zentek Ltd. (“Zentek” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: ZTEK; TSX-V: ZEN), an intellectual property development and commercialization company, announces its decision that its ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filters will be added under the company’s existing medical device establishment licence (“MDEL”), similar to ZenGUARD™ Surgical Masks. Initial test work and validation began on ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filters in early 2021, culminating in the award of an Innovative Solutions Canada (“ISC”) Testing Stream. The purpose of the ISC Testing Stream – The Government of Canada contract awarded in 2021 – was to determine whether ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filters could achieve a significant net reduction in airborne respiratory pathogens, thereby validating it as an effective device to mitigate the transmission of disease Independent proof-of-concept testing and validation was completed by the National Research Council of Canada in their unique bioaerosol facility, a purpose-built modular room intended to simulate the risk of infection in a real-world classroom environment. LMS Technologies Inc. was subsequently contracted to test ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filter finished products and reported an average viral filtration efficiency (“VFE”) enhancement of ~66% compared to an untreated filter, or an average ~67% VFE under simulated operating conditions over 6 months with negligible change in pressure drop. This extensive testing program was conducted over the course of approximately two years and successfully demonstrated that ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filters can achieve a significant reduction in airborne respiratory pathogens to help mitigate the transmission of disease indoors. To further validate this, the Company completed a study with ParticleOne, a RWDI Ventures company, ParticleOne’s computational model showcased ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filter’s viral filtration action, effectively reducing the spread of viral pathogens and enhancing indoor safety. It also demonstrated potential cost savings from absenteeism related to poor indoor air quality. Quality Management System Prior to distributing and selling an additional medical device in Canada, certain testing, process updates and additional documentation related to the Company’s supply chain will be required to qualify ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filters as a medical device under its MDEL and ensure compliance with its ISO 13485:2016 Quality Management System. While this process will take additional time and resources, the Company expects it to be significantly less than that required under the previous pathway to market being pursued.

New Insights into the Lamb Shift: The Spectral Density of the Shift | Article by G. Jordan Maclay https://lnkd.in/gwPnPwsb Quantum Fields LLC; MDPI #Bethe #RadiativeShift #vacuum #fluctuation #QED #Lamb #physics #OpenAccess This article belongs to the Special Issue: Vacuum Fluctuations https://lnkd.in/giM8cvCX #Abstract In an atom, the interaction of a bound electron with the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field leads to complex shifts in the energy levels of the electron, with the real part of the shift corresponding to a shift in the energy level and the imaginary part to the width of the energy level. The most celebrated radiative shift is the Lamb shift between the 2𝑠 1/2 and the 2𝑝 1/2 levels of the hydrogen atom. The measurement of this shift in 1947 by Willis Lamb Jr. proved that the prediction by Dirac theory that the energy levels were degenerate was incorrect. Hans Bethe’s non-relativistic calculation of the shift using second-order perturbation theory demonstrated the renormalization process required to deal with the divergences plaguing the existing theories and led to the understanding that it was essential for theory to include interactions with the zero-point quantum vacuum field. This was the birth of modern quantum electrodynamics (QED). Numerous calculations of the Lamb shift followed including relativistic and covariant calculations, all of which contain a nonrelativistic contribution equal to that computed by Bethe. The semi-quantitative models for the radiative shift of Welton and Power, which were developed in an effort to demonstrate physical mechanisms by which vacuum fluctuations lead to the shift, are also considered here. This paper describes a calculation of the shift using a group theoretical approach which gives the shift as an integral over frequency of a function, which is called the “spectral density of the shift.“ The energy shift computed by group theory is equivalent to that derived by Bethe yet, unlike in other calculations of the non-relativistic radiative shift, no sum over a complete set of states is required. The spectral density, which is obtained by a relatively simple computation, reveals how different frequencies of vacuum fluctuations contribute to the total energy shift. The analysis shows, for example, that half the radiative shift for the ground state 1S level in H comes from virtual photon energies below 9700 eV, and that the expressions of Power and Welton have the correct high-frequency behavior, but not the correct low-frequency behavior, although they do give approximately the correct value for the total shift.
