In a significant victory for Vaughan McLean in Northrop v. Amphenol Corp., the longstanding “coverage cannot be waived” mantra faced a challenge as the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department ruled against a carrier attempting to shift liability. This decision underscores the importance of timely responses in Workers’ Compensation cases where liability might initially appear misassigned. In this case, the Court upheld that a carrier's delayed coverage contestation can result in lasting responsibility under the doctrine of laches. Employers and carriers should take note: when dealing with occupational disease claims involving multiple potential dates of disablement, simply relying on “coverage cannot be waived” might fall short of shielding against liability. North American robot sales declined in Q2 2024, with 7,123 robots ordered, down 9.7% from Q2 2023, despite a 6.9% rise in revenue to $489 million. A3 attributes the drop to slowdowns in the automotive and semiconductor sectors, with overall sales down 7.9% in the first half of 2024. However, growth in non-automotive sectors, such as food, consumer goods, and pharmaceuticals, showed strong increases. The revenue growth despite fewer units sold suggests a shift towards investing in higher-value, advanced robots to boost efficiency amid economic uncertainties. Tariffs can change the world we work in. Being a semiconductor supplier/customer just got more complicated: One thing that dominated the conversations at Electronica this year was concern about new tariffs on EVs and Semiconductors. Car OEMs and Tier-1’s are naturally worried about the impact tariffs would have on sales, partnerships, and supply. I heard from customers that sometimes they need parts manufactured in China, and sometimes just the opposite. At Infineon Memories, we have a worldwide manufacturing footprint – US, China, Taiwan, Bangkok. We can tailor our supply chain to customer needs. For some of our products, customers can choose between 1) made in China for China, or 2) manufactured outside China and also outside Taiwan - for otherwise identical products. This is one of the ways we are providing valuable supply chain services in these uncertain times.
