Canadian Founders Shouldn’t need to leave Canada. We need to fix our system. 🍁 Last week I was catching up with a founder from Canada. She had just returned from spending 3 months in SF. She said it was insane how the entire ecosystem there is built to incubate and launch startups but then also support them for the entire lifecycle through Series A and beyond.  In Canada we’re ok at getting companies started but then we have little support beyond that and we ultimately lose them to the valley. Her suggestion was to take all the money the Canadian government is throwing at our tech sector, and instead use it to send our Founders to SF for 3 months for a Founder crash course. As a Canadian, hearing that is super depressing but also accurate. My roadmap at Developer Capital is to find and fund great Canadian companies in the pre-seed and seed round, but then get them into the US for their Series A. Why? Valuations are better, risk appetites are sharper and it will help your sales when breaking into the US market. How can we as a country support them and encourage them to stay in Canada? The Challenge: Canada’s Startup Ecosystem is Broken 💔 If we don’t want to lose our brightest founders to the US, we need to re-evaluate our approach. We need to provide the SF experience right here at home. Here’s what we can do: ⚫ Access to capital. Yeah, im sure you’ve heard this before. Pre-seed doesn’t exist in Canada. Developer Capital is trying to change that but we’re only one firm. There needs to be more deal flow sharing amongst the pre-seed and seed stage funds. This one’s on us in the VC community. We can do better. We can share our deals. We can get out in the world more and meet Founders. Rather than waiting for others to validate our own opinions we can lead rounds and be first money in. ⚫ Ecosystem support. It’s pretty nuts the difference this one makes. When a company comes out of SF they instantly have access to a network of 1000’s of early adopter companies to go out and buy their product. And the VCs who invest ask all their Portcos to take a deep look at buying these great new products. Incestuous? Yes but it works, and gets these start ups to millions in ARR fairly quickly. ⚫ The right infrastructure: Accelerators and incubators sometimes get a bad rap, but the good ones do the job of acting like a bootcamp to get your company launched, understand how to get financed, and then how to iterate until you find product market fit. Canada needs to up its game and come out with a couple of AAA accelerators. If McGill is the “Harvard of the North” why can’t Canada have a “YC of the North”? I’m not pretending to have all the solutions. This is clearly a “hard problem to solve”. But as a proud Canadian I know we can do better and I want to be able for our best companies to stay here forever (whatup Shopify). We have the talent and the ideas; now we need the infrastructure and the networks to match. Let's make Canada a powerhouse! 🍁 🚀

"Raising VC money doesn't feel good." At the dog park a while ago, I ran into a founder that I'd coached through Techstars Toronto Accelerator. I asked him how his company was doing. He told me, and it was exactly like founders dream it up: - found PMF - raised millions - scaled the company - and no longer CEO, he sits on the board "Now, I can just walk my dog whenever I want!" "But," he said: "It was not fun." He told me that he'd been asked to speak to a group of early-stage founders and the first thing he said to them was: "Raising money doesn't feel good." (They were all shocked, he said). He talked about all the pressure, conflict and stress of being a VC-backed founder. Since then, I've heard so many similar stories, so I made a decision a few months back: Even though my niche was "tech founders raising money" for 7 years, I was no longer gonna make that my thing. I don't feel right encouraging entrepreneurs to try and create a scalable company anymore, cause I think for 99% of founders it's not even what they want. They've just been sold a dream. And the people who DO want it probably don't need my help anyway. These days, I'm focusing on: - solo business owners - mainly service providers - building a bootstrapped company - focused on sales, marketing, and profitability vs. 'venture scale' I'm continuing to support Ontario accelerators because I love helping entrepreneurs, but in my: - content - speaking - coaching - & community I'm advocating for solopreneurship, bootstrapping, and building an honest personal brand. Canada's Brain Drain is undeniable! 🌍 Why are ambitious Canadian startup founders flocking to the US? 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 The US economy is 12.5x larger but its VC industry is 30x larger. In 2023, US VC deals were $150-200 billion while Canada was ~$6 billion. 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 In the US, speed and risk-taking reign supreme. It's a dynamic environment where ideas rapidly transform into reality, unlike the more cautious pace in Canada. 2 tips from a senior partner Lightspeed (Jeremy Liew) on breaking into #venturecapital: "Suppose you’re young and have little operational experience. Instead of compensating for your weaknesses (you don’t need to go work for a startup for 10 years to gain operating experience!), spend time amplifying your strengths. What can you do that people in their 40s can’t? Can you go out and network more in the evening than they can? Do that. Do you have more time to dig into new, untapped areas than traditional investors (where no one is an expert)? Do that. Do what others cannot. Another example, suppose that you have a business or arts background, but you’re not deeply technical. You don’t need to go get a Masters in CS, or even to do a coding bootcamp to compensate. Instead, play to your strengths. Are you closer to pop culture than the average VC? Use that insight. Focus on categories that don’t need deep technical experience (e.g. e-commerce, marketplaces, SaaS) and build expertise in understanding go-to-market and industry structures." Big visions demand big risks—and even bigger resilience. People are quick to give you a thousand reasons why your vision won’t work—and slow to give you the time of day to help you get there. And here’s the tricky part: when you hang around smart people long enough, they’re usually not wrong. If your mind isn’t already made up, they’ll convince you to stay safe, stick to the straight and narrow, and settle for less. Here’s the irony: the desire to share your vision often defeats it before you even get started. Sometimes, you just need to shut up and get things done. Because let’s be real—nobody wants more friction to achieve their dreams. They want cheerleaders. But unless you’ve got a track record or past wins, good luck finding them. So stop debating and start doing. Nothing massive is ever convenient. Short-term runway matters—but not at the cost of your long-term vision. Sometimes you have to dig deep and go all in. Buy that flight. Shoot that shot. Risk looking dumb. Be unabashedly bold in your faith, your effort, and your willingness to take hits along the way. Just like a fighter bites down on their mouthguard to push forward, sometimes you’ve got to take the punches if you want to be the champ. Be smart, but don’t overthink it. Let the A students work for you if you’re a C student—and drive your vision home. You’ve been preparing for this. Rely on your faith. Trust your intuition. Strip it all down to first principles: power laws, risk curves, big swings. If you can do that, there are zero excuses not to live your dream—and let it pay your bills. This morning, I’m leaving Canada for #SanFrancisco and #SiliconValley to get inspired and surround myself with bold thinkers at the All-In Podcast holiday party. Some VCs call it "diversification" when it is really just a lack of conviction.  They spread their investments in as many companies as possible and hope one succeeds—” spray and pray,” as it's called. At Bonfire Ventures 🔥, we do the opposite: Instead of chasing every shiny opportunity, we invest in fewer companies and go all in. We are a low-volume, high-conviction, high-support investor, and as Fred Wilson says, "That is who you want on your side." We invest in 8-10 deals per year, with a first check of $2-4 million each, and reserve plenty of follow-on capital. Why? Anyone can write a check. The real challenge—and the actual value—is in the subsequent and ongoing partnership. You can’t build meaningful relationships with founders, provide hands-on support, and be there for the good days and the bad if you're juggling a hundred projects. You need to know the founders, the market, and the business inside and out. That's what we do. During my investment banking days, I learned that you can’t work with every company that knocks on your door. You pick the ones you truly believe in, where you can see the potential in both the people and the product. Scopely is a prime example. We didn’t just invest in 2012. We worked closely with them and rolled up our sleeves. That partnership turned into a $5 billion cash exit in 2023. That’s what happens when you focus on quality over quantity. Super fun to be back at the Collision Conf in #Toronto talking about what's happening in Seed stage investing. While deal count and deal volume are down significantly this year, there's some prep that founders can do to get ahead of the slow down: -Build a larger top of the funnel, you'll likely need to talk to more investors. -The round may take longer so make sure that your runway can sustain it. -This is both a marathon and sprint so go hard but also play the long game.
