At the recent Blockchain Futurist Conference, representatives from Coinbase and Kraken Digital Asset Exchange - both Canadian Web3 Council members - highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration between the crypto industry and policymakers. “The reality is that members of parliament today in Canada are not hearing from their constituents about the importance of digital assets and cryptocurrencies,” explained Coinbase’s CEO for Canada, Lucas Matheson, MBA, CFA. Hong Kong showcased its expertise in crypto and Web3 technologies at Collision 2024 in Toronto, aiming to attract Canadian startups with favorable tax rates and regulations tailored for tech innovators. Toronto ETO officials highlighted Hong Kong's appeal for "pre-commercial specialist technology companies," emphasizing the city's support for sectors like fintech, health tech, green tech, and property tech, with a strong focus on Web3 and virtual assets in Asia. Canada and Hong Kong have maintained a double tax agreement for over a decade, ensuring Canadian businesses in Hong Kong can access public and private funding without facing double taxation issues. Recently, Hong Kong's Legislative Council established a Subcommittee on Web3 and Virtual Asset Development to foster a regulatory environment conducive to digital asset growth. This initiative seeks to balance technical, legal, and regulatory frameworks to support robust Web3 development in Hong Kong. In a regulatory move, Hong Kong closed down all unlicensed crypto exchanges earlier this year. Despite initial interest from over 20 exchanges to obtain licenses, many withdrew due to compliance challenges. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) have extended the deadline for crypto asset trading platforms (CTPs) to comply with new regulations for value-referenced crypto assets (VRCAs) until December 31, 2024. This includes stablecoins like USDC and Tether, as well as wrapped tokens such as WBTC and WETH. Currently, no VRCAs meet the CSA’s requirements, which could lead to significant disruptions in the Canadian crypto market if non-compliant assets are delisted. Sometimes timing is everything and our launch of the first public Dogecoin proxy in Canada as CSE:SPIR and the US as OTC:SPLCF couldn't have been any better. The strategy is 2 fold: 1) Create and develop more utility for the Dogecoin ecosystem thus accelerating adoption and the institutionalization for global markets 2) Introduce an on-chain tokenized asset management platform that can take in crypto or fiat in exchange for LP exposure to traditional asset management funds and annual yield or distribution. As an example: Dogecoin can now allocate to real estate on-chain making 8-12% / yr and receive distributions in any currency or coin they deem. This is a business that is merging traditional asset management with digital asset management which is one of the largest trends underway globally, and we have a 16-24 month regulatory moat before we see any public listed full prospectus cleared competition. Bitcoin reaches its peak price in every cycle ~500 days post-halving like clockwork, which puts us in Sept 2026. I suspect the rest of the ecosystem will follow as always, especially Dogecoin.
