Baku Declaration - Global Summit of Religious Leaders within COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, November 5-6, 2024 The Summit, held under the slogan "Religion for a Green Planet," was organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and the Caucasus Muslims' Board. This event gathered approximately 300 distinguished figures, including religious leaders, government representatives, high-ranking UN officials, and other international figures. The Summit participants expressed: Deep concern about global climate change, deforestation, droughts, environmental pollution, and water scarcity. Appreciation for the Abu Dhabi Interfaith Declaration, signed in 2023, which promotes interfaith cooperation. Emphasis on the importance of the Document on Human Fraternity, signed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, to reinforce interfaith collaboration. Invitation to states and international organizations: To actively participate in public discussions to address the climate crisis. To respect the values of life and nature and to promote environmental justice and equality. To support the implementation of the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement. Call for international awareness: Participants emphasized the need for interfaith events where representatives of different religions can discuss issues affecting the contemporary world.

On July 29 the World Bank approved an additional financing to scale-up Azerbaijan Employment Support Project. This project promotes opportunities for self-employment and implements additional active labor market measures, such as on-the-job-training, wage subsidies, an apprenticeship program, vocational training development, and certification fee reimbursement to stimulate the employment of jobseekers, by upgrading their skills to match the demand in the manufacturing and services sectors. This additional financing will help expand the coverage of the project to reach out to more vulnerable populations in Azerbaijan, such as internally displaced persons, women, youth, recipients of the targeted social assistance benefits, and long-term unemployed. It builds on very strong results of the parent project with more than 15,000 people receiving assets to start their business, one third of whom are women. Over 75% of the micro-business supported by the project are still in operation after 24 months and have realized sales. It is a privilege to partner with the Governemnt of Azerbaijan in helping to improve the livelihoods of the poorest and most vulnerable.

Kazakh and Uzbek business leaders signed 76 documents worth more than $352 million during the fourth Uzbekistan – Kazakhstan interregional cooperation forum on Oct. 22 in Samarkand. The list of signed documents include the plan of practical actions to accelerate the implementation of agreements reached at the highest level. The document provides for the implementation of joint projects in energy, mining, and geology. The meeting participants also inked agreements on cooperation in trade and economic, scientific and technical, cultural and humanitarian spheres between the regions of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is Kazakhstan’s main trading partner in the Central Asian region. In January-August, the volume of mutual trade reached $2.5 billion. Bektenov underlined the need to expand measures aimed at developing trade and economic cooperation and creating favorable conditions for mutual investment. “Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have broad prospects for joint work in all areas.Investment agreements and commercial contracts worth $7 billion signed at the business forum in Astana, will make a significant contribution. Kazakhstan is ready to increase export deliveries to Uzbekistan by over $550 million for 40 types of Kazakh high-value goods “Over the past seven years, mutual trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan has grown almost 2.5 times, reaching $4.4 billion last year. Today, there are more than 1,000 enterprises with Kazakh capital operating in Uzbekistan. The officials also focused on the development of industrial cooperation, which provides for the implementation of 74 joint projects with an investment volume of $3.4 billion and the creation of 14,600 jobs. Of these, 65 enterprises will be opened in Kazakhstan, creating 13,600 new jobs. To date, nine joint projects have been implemented in Kazakhstan, and three more in Uzbekistan, that employed 4,800 people in total. The Zangazur Corridor is a proposed transport route connecting mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave, passing through Armenia’s southern Syunik region. This corridor is part of a broader regional infrastructure plan following the 2020 Karabakh war, with Azerbaijan advocating for its development under agreements brokered by Russia. Lately, Russia has demonstrated support for the Zangazur Corridor, seeing it as a way to boost regional connectivity, solidify its influence in the South Caucasus, and diversify its transport routes due to the imposed Western sanctions. Moscow views this corridor as a strategic link between Europe and Asia, and so do Azerbaijan and Turkey, aligning it with their geopolitical and economic interests. However, Iran is vehemently opposed to the project. Tehran sees the corridor threatening its regional influence, fearing it could cut off direct land access to Armenia and disrupt its trade routes. Additionally, Iran worries about increasing Turkish and Azerbaijani influence in the region, which could shift the balance of power along its northern borders. This was probably the case because Iran agreed to a transit route connecting western Azerbaijan with its exclave of Nakhchivan through Iran via a bridge over the Aras that connects the two countries. This geopolitical tug-of-war underscores the complex dynamics at play, as regional powers vie for influence in the Caucasus, with the Zangazur Corridor at the heart of the dispute. In this dispute, Armenia is a stubborn neighbor working for its own harm. It must overcome its anger and try to abate hostility against this project. On the other hand, Armenia’s opposition to the Zangazur Corridor could be a strategic mistake. The corridor presents a unique regional connectivity and economic growth opportunity, potentially turning Armenia into a key transit hub between Europe and Asia. Blocking it may isolate Armenia further and deepen economic challenges while Azerbaijan and Turkey strengthen their positions. Instead of resisting, Armenia could benefit from engaging in dialogue and leveraging the corridor for its advantage. In Uzbekistan, 74.72% of registered voters, or 15,027,527 people out of more than 19.944 million, voted in the elections of deputies to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and the Kengashes of People's Deputies, held on October 27. This was announced at a briefing in Tashkent on Monday by Chairman of the Central Election Commission Zainiddin Nizamkhodjaev. According to him, a total of 140,388 people voted at polling stations abroad. He recalled that 1,015,948 people voted early, 132,667 people abroad (October 16-23). According to preliminary data, 26 deputies were elected to the Legislative Chamber from UzLiDeP according to party lists. That is, the first 26 deputies from the list (where 100 candidates are indicated) receive a notification of election as a parliamentarian. The Milliy Tiklanish Democratic Party won 14 seats, the People's Democratic Party - 13 seats, the Social Democratic Party Adolat — 12 seats and the Environmental Party - 10 seats. According to the results of the assessment of the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan, by the end of 2023, the poverty level in Uzbekistan has decreased to 11.0%. The Center for Economic Research and Reforms conducted an analysis of changes in the level of well-being of the population of Uzbekistan in 2022-2023 based on data from a household budget survey throughout the republic. It should be noted that the change in the poverty level in Uzbekistan has been revised based on the best international practices. Thus, the international calculation method used is based on the concept of the World Bank. In particular, household budgets throughout the republic are being studied throughout the year. This is a continuation of my posts about Cityscape Global! I would like to devote this post to Balady | بلدي since I have already talked about the parent organization National Housing Company (NHC) and the over-arching Ministry of Municipalities and Housing. Balady | بلدي is the national smart city enabler in Saudi Arabia, and its stand showed why it is becoming a pioneer in digital transformation. Together with our strategic partner NAVER Corp we showcased our powerful digital twin platform. It is impressive to see what it can already do today. I am confident this is extremely relevant to municipalities and larger companies. Features like city planning, city monitoring, flood simulation or traffic simulation can be conveniently provided in an SaaS or in a PaaS model. Our combined stand attracted multiple high-profile delegations from municipalities and larger companies to better understand how it works and therefore accelerated our business development efforts.
