Would you pretty please do me a favour? ♥️ Please STOP giving up too quickly on your dreams because of how long it is taking you to accomplish them.🥹 I know what it feels like to beat yourself up internally or playing the “it might be too late game,” or feel like throwing in the towel simply because the amount of time it is taking you to get to the destination you desire. And while I have the utmost compassion for that feeling this message is a reminder that good things take time. And anything worth it IS WORTH THE WAIT. Especially as an entrepreneur, hyperactive and big vision, quick starter personality type, creating a healthy relationship with patience has quite literally saved me in both my professional and personal life. It’s so important for you to remember your WHY in these times. Why did you start this journey? Who are you doing this for? What are you creating? Who might this help? And most importantly WHO ARE YOU BECOMING BECAUSE OF THIS EXPERIENCE? Your life is going to pass by anyway. It’s easy to get happy ears when evaluating an opportunity and accidentally fall trap to *confirmation bias* instead of actually evaluating it for its merit. Couple of examples as a sales leader: 1️⃣ Tons of PLG demand 🤩 This seems like the dream. Have a bunch of people that are interested and have tested your product in some form. Finding ways to upsell them or expand seems way easier than outbound selling. Sign me up ✅ But.. the questions to evaluate: - does the company have a clear ICP they are targeting? Do they have an understanding of who are the target users and the buyer here? (PLG businesses can be horizontal which means there is no single target persona and requires a cultural shift to drive sales growth) - how important is the sales led motion in the next 12 months? what type of resources are they willing to invest in this growth? what type of sacrifice would they be willing to make (like product roadmap, growth rate, margin, plg momentum) short term to get this right? 2️⃣ Great product / engg teams 🤩 As a sales leader, i want to represent the best product in market. This means working with the highest quality technical teams is a key to driving big $$s But… the questions to evaluate: - are they willing to optimize for product velocity at the cost of craft? (If that’s what the market demands) - do they respect the customers voice? how do they incorporate customer feedback into their product strategy? How important is the market reality (competitors, broader trends) when making roadmap decisions? - will they make exceptions to their POV to help expedite GTM? Spending time at a company is a big decision and it’s easy to get enamored by the superficial strengths alone... 🛑 Cool investors, inbound / PLG traction, amazing engg team are all great but ultimately it comes down to: 🔑 teams ability to respect your portion of the biz and 🔑 adapt to the needs to the market / customers It requires objective evaluation of their weaknesses and connecting that your individual skills and attributes ✅ #recruiting #hiring #cro #salesleadership #vpsales #execrecruiting

Outreach hasn’t changed for years. Like at all. Yes, we have new tech. It allows us making mistakes at scale.😅 Outreach trends that never changed: ✅ Most people don’t want to do it at all ✅ We still communicate unnaturally ✅ We’re still debating if calling people works ✅ Our teams are still poorly trained ✅ We’re still wondering why lead gen is poor ✅ Most organisations are doing NOTHING about it I’m wondering, how many years will it take for companies to figure out how to do outbound?? 🚩 Hard truth for AE candidates: Short stints are almost always a non-starter. Why? In enterprise sales, real impact (and earnings) often don't materialize or peak until years 2-3. This is table stakes for every decision maker in the hiring process. Consistent tenure is the bare minimum for your profile to even be considered. But here's the challenge: 🚀 In the startup world, is an AE's "job-hopping" always a red flag? With most startups pivoting, exiting, or failing, short tenures can reflect the landscape, not performance. So when do we dig deeper? After years of placing top-tier GTM talent, here's our approach: 🔍 We investigate further ONLY when ALL of these criteria are met: - Strong performance history shines through - Exits align with startup lifecycles (funding rounds, acquisitions) - Longer tenures balance out brief stints - Candidate radiates an ownership mindset (btw - big topic, for another post) - Overall profile and interview are impressive/compelling Meeting this bar is non-negotiable for candidates we present to clients. 🛑 It's still a hard stop if: - Pattern of leaving before impact, even in stable environments - Consistent performance issues across roles - Explanations sound like excuses, not ownership 💡 To candidates: When possible, see your commitments through. Have seen organizations posting happy workers and idk, it looks fake af. It’s all just a marketing stunt, isn’t it? Companies showing off their “great culture” while employees can barely afford a ride home. You’re not fooling anyone. If your people are underpaid and struggling, no amount of staged smiles and team photos will cover that up. A real work culture isn’t something you can slap on a poster or in a LinkedIn post. If you're living in luxury while your employees scrape by, you’re not a leader—you’re a failure. Stop using your team as props in your PR game. Pay them what they deserve and get the fuck out of here.

What a 9 day fishing trip to a remote lake in Canada can teach you about cold calling… I recently took a trip to northern Manitoba to catch walleye. For those of you who don’t know - this is where the biggest walleye in the world swim. Basically a came to a simple conclusion. Sure you can do it with a rental boat and no fish finders. Just throw out a bobber and wait for her to drop. In fact, a of the few days our graphs & fish finders didn’t work… And this is what we had to do. I got to thinking that this is the equivalent to not having the right tools as a cold caller. Yes we still caught fish - but we weren’t able to locate them and increase our odds. And in fishing… the spot is the strategy. You can have the best lure but if you’re in a lake with no fish good luck… Sort of like how your list is your strategy in cold calling. And depending on the spot, we would use different lures. Kind of like we use different scripts and different offers to different lists. When something wasn’t working…. We would try something new. And when someone did find a winner, everybody else would switch to it…. Once we burned that spot (list) we would try a new spot, with new lures, and the pattern repeats. It was a constant game of guess and check. I couldn’t help but think as cold callers… We sit on the dialer and guess and check different combos of messages to lists until we find our winners. Once we do… we run with them until they stop working. We try a new script or new list and the pattern repeats 📞 🎣 — Am I the only one noticing cold calling metaphors showing up in real life? 😅

🕒 Late on the 15? 🕤 Don't apologize. Two (three) tips: #1) Scheduling on the 15's (Vs. the top or bottom of the hour) can help create buffers between meetings for prep/recap (and breathing). It also is a "noticeable" mark on the calendar for you and your colleague, customer or friend. Lesson learned: 15's such as 2:45 to 3:30 or 2:30 to 3:15 can become confused with the other if not paying attention. I made that mistake just yesterday and ended up 15 minutes late for a meeting. #2) If you're late—don't apologize. I lecture about this to others: Don't make a scene. Don't waste time with, "I'm so sorry... Here's why I'm late." Don't explain. Doing so makes it all about the late person (you) (or me in this case) versus being considerate of the party in waiting. Yep, I successfully made that mistake too. I started with my big-huge, gushy, explanatory apology 🙃. Fortunately, I had a gracious meeting partner who put me at ease and smiled as our Zoom meeting commenced—late. A better opening on my part might have been something akin to, "Thank you for tolerating my tardiness—I very much appreciate your gracious patience." That makes it about them— not me. Further, it allows us to get to work more quickly. From being unemployed and feeling hopeless to a $62K+ offer as an Executive Assistant! (She even negotiated a $5/hr increase!) Here's how she did it... Before joining us, she was struggling to navigate the Canadian job market. She had a successful career, a comfortable life, and financial stability back home in India. I nearly had a mental breakdown. It was at my first Sales job in 2008. Over a 3 week span, not only did I not close a single deal - much worse - I didn’t receive a single order from a client. For some perspective, during that exact time, my peers were on a roll. Bringing in 10 - 20 orders and closing just as many each week. They were high fiving. Laughing. Joking. Hugging. Talking about going out for drinks to celebrate. They had every reason to celebrate. They were making money hand over fist! And then there was me. A giant goose egg by my name on the Sales board. Nothing to show for the seemingly endless, fruitless calls I was making. I felt AWFUL. Like a complete and total failure. I couldn’t do anything right. I actually went so far as to convince myself that I’d never get another order again. This is not hyperbole - I actually felt that was a possibility! My brain was scrambled. Anxiety spiked. I was white knuckling the phone. I anticipated rejection before it even happened. Reflecting, I’m certain of three things: 1) My clients sensed my desperation 2) I wasn’t being a team player to my colleagues 3) I was feeling bad for myself and making things worse by telling myself I wasn’t going to succeed I remember this painful memory so vividly it actually makes my heart palpitate as I craft this. Perhaps you can even feel or sense how deflating this experience was for me. Finally… Someone called me back. I did my best to contain my composure. In that moment it was the only thing that mattered. And thankfully I didn’t smother it. I successfully managed to receive what I was given. I was choked up. I felt like crying because I was so broken. My body had been in knots for weeks. It craved a release. The funny thing is I don’t even remember if I filled that order. I like to think I did. But it’s entirely possible I didn’t. This isn’t a story about redemption or the power of perseverance or anything like that, although I did have tremendous success at that organization. This is really just an experience I had that left an indelible mark on me. It taught me that Sales is really damn difficult. Not always. But sometimes. And when it’s tough, it can be really difficult to pull yourself up on your own every day. But that’s what you have to do. Otherwise, you may as well just give in and give up. Maybe this is an anticlimactic ending to you. I don’t know. All I know is that to me, this was and is a very real memory. Yes, it's a painful one. But it’s also an experience I can use as a reference if and when it happens again. #vulnerability #sales #realtalk

Growing up in a new immigrant household with limited resources, I was often surrounded by overthinking, regret, and guilt. It wasn’t what my parents wanted, but it was common in our community because so much was at stake. I was always told that not all 'wrong' decisions are equal because it costs a whole lot more for marginalized groups to recoup. So, it took me many years to unlearn some of the most time-sucking, backward-moving energies (often used as a form of safety) into forward-moving momentum and opportunities — 1) Rather than overthinking about making a perfect choice, learn to make ANY choice to ensure you’re inching forward, not backward. 2) Turn regret into opportunities by focusing on what you can learn from the past instead of trying to change it. 3) Reframing guilt into appreciation by not being chained to what’s happened in the past but by appreciating the experience and the growth you’ve gained from it. Your energy is everything. It affects your thoughts, actions, and decisions. Learning to manage it will change your life. ▶️▶️ What other useless energies do I need to include in this list?

Potentially unpopular opinion alert: It takes more than one year to prove you can be long-term successful selling something. I talk to people all the time who tell me they had the fastest ramp at the company or finished 200% to their ramping quota. That is amazing and absolutely something you should talk about in an interview. But most people hiring for sales want to see that you can do two things: 1. Create repeat success- have multiple consecutive successful months/ quarters (this shows you have strong systems and work ethic) 2. Overcome a slump- everyone has them, and this demonstrates resiliency There are lots of people in SaaS sales who have 1yr and 3 month stints at 5 different companies. Even if you were 100%+ to plan in that 1 year, sales hiring leaders will still be left questioning your grit and resilience. My suggestion if you have stints like this: come prepared with scenarios where you demonstrated grit and the ability to overcome hardship and failure. This could be a prospect that said no 20 times before they said yes, or a huge deal that took multithreading a ton of people to close, something like that. Short stints aren’t all bad, but you will need to come with additional evidence to your interviews to prove that you can overcome failure and create replicable success.

I made a big mistake as a new people leader I asked my team to work over their Christmas vacation. And ask might be too nice a term—I more “demanded” them to work, an ask that has me cringing with shame now. I was a new people leader and felt I had to prove myself to my boss. I was leading a high-stakes project with big deliverables and tight timelines and I was scared of the leadership team (most of which were men with wives and nannies to look after their families and one female leader with multiple nannies). My team consisted primarily of working moms who wanted to spend Christmas with their families, some of whom were travelling back to their home countries. None of us had nannies. But, I feared that if I pushed back on the timelines I would get fired. So I became just as bad as the leadership team and passed the unreasonable expectations and demands down the line. Looking back, I’m filled with regret. I failed my team in that moment—by not standing up for them and by prioritizing my fear over their well-being. I lost sight of the fact that leadership isn’t about proving yourself at the expense of others; it’s about protecting, supporting, and empowering the people you lead. That mistake was a hard lesson, but an invaluable one. It taught me the importance of setting boundaries, advocating for the team, and fostering a culture of respect and balance. I now know that fear should never drive leadership decisions. If you're in a leadership position or striving for one, remember this: it's okay to push back. It's okay to ask for help. And it’s okay to say no to unreasonable demands. Your team’s well-being isn’t just important—it’s your responsibility. Learn from my mistake, so you don't make the same one. Seriously, it’s a game-changer for getting everyone’s attention in a rather elegant way than yelling. 💡 Mindful: Learned this gem from Ezra Bookman: do prepare all you can before the session, but once it starts, dial down your expectations, ramp up your presence, and be ready and attentive for what unfolds. I’m in the middle of organizing a facilitation learning path and, honestly, it’s been a fun challenge to keep things simple and clear. The more perspectives the better, so I’d love to hear yours! Did you know that today, May 15th, is Break the Glass Ceiling Day?   In the last 3 years, overall conversations around breaking the glass ceiling have declined almost 40% and positive sentiment towards gender bias has plunged 56%. The conversation is dwindling when there still so much work to be done. We're seeing it across the corporate landscape with the rollback on DEI and the entrepreneurial landscape with continued lack of access to capital for women and underrepresented communities. The World Economic Forum’s 2021 Global Gender Gap Report estimated that it will take an average of 135.6 years for women and men to reach parity on a range of factors worldwide. As a result, and thanks to my friend/mentor/Luminary Member Jennifer DaSilva, VML and Luminary have partnered and are dedicating May 15th, (which is the 135th day of the year) to uplift and empower women to break the glass ceilings in their lives that are holding them back. It doesn’t have to be one moment, or the traditional corporate glass ceiling, it can be about the personal glass ceilings that we break every day. Now is the time to be LOUD to help amplify the conversation for women over time.  And we invite our allies to join us too.   I ask you to share the effort in social.
