Detection of Colon #cancer is now as easy as chewing gum! Is this the future? Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in Canada. 1 in 16 men will develop colorectal cancer during their lifetime. But, a recent discovery suggests that bacteria in your mouth could be a new way to discover colon cancer. This discovery is particularly significant as colon cancer rates are on the rise among younger individuals. Over the past 15 years, there has been a doubling in the percentage of people under 50 diagnosed with colon cancer. This trend has prompted some physicians to recommend screening tests earlier, starting from 45, rather than the previous recommendation of 50. While the reasons behind this increase are still unclear, early detection and awareness remain crucial defenses against the disease. Traditionally, colon cancer detection is from symptoms that may be considered trivial such as changes in bowel habits. Bleeding has always been a red flag. Most patients end up getting a CT scan and then other invasive tests such as colonoscopy or surgery. However, identifying a specific subspecies of the bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum has opened up new possibilities. This bacteria has been linked to the growth and progression of colon cancer, suggesting a potential avenue for early detection and targeted treatment. As of now, further research is needed to fully understand the role of this bacteria in creating an environment conducive to cancer cell growth in the colon. Whooping Cough cases have increased in many European countries over the past few months. Now, Quebec and Alberta are seeing higher infection rates. While this disease is often overlooked, it can pose a significant threat to our children. Pertussis—more commonly known as Whooping Cough— is a highly contagious bacterial disease that primarily affects infants and young children, who can face severe complications, hospitalizations, and sadly, even death. The disease starts off with cold-like symptoms, but as it progresses, it leads to severe coughing fits that can make it difficult for children to eat, drink, or even breathe. The distinct 'whooping' sound that follows these coughing fits gives the disease its name. But here's the good news: Whooping Cough is preventable. Vaccination is our most effective tool in this fight. Infants and pregnant women should receive the vaccine to build the antibodies that protect newborns. Those who will be around newborns should also make sure that they are immunized. As a society, we need to stay vigilant, prioritize getting ourselves and our children vaccinated, and spread awareness about this disease. Our collective efforts can help keep our communities safe and healthy. Remember, your health and the health of those around you is in your hands. HPV-related diseases and cancers, such as cervical and oropharyngeal cancer, are preventable through vaccination. However, fewer than 20% of Canadian adults are immunized. Four years ago, Canada answered the World Health Organization's call to eliminate cervical cancer, setting a national target to vaccinate 90% of 17-year-olds by 2025. Today, Canada sits far away from reaching this goal. If we do not act now to improve immunization across the country, thousands of Canadians will remain at risk of developing HPV-related cancer in their lifetime, which could have been prevented. 1st of my patients trying to access Epiodilex in Canada…. 3500$/ month. (2 bottles/month family calculated based on avg dose they would need) They have been debating between an LP and Epidiolex. Yup! No word on coverage. Waiting to see if EDS will approve… not covered by insurance for this family. Other products from LPs are 50-80% off for kids and probably max 500$/month. Just putting it out there!! So no they are not going with the pharma option…unless there’s coverage… And yes I’m very aware that it’s an isolate and the products we have are way better being full spectrum. These families just want to explore the option though so it’s interesting to follow. Seems like it’ll be impossible to even afford so in Canada at least we have tonnes of other accessible options. I’ve been told only the epileptologists (neurologists specializing in Epilepsy) can prescribe- but they have never used any CBD products before and have no knowledge of these products here. (I cannot prescribe it) They still have told my patients how dangerous CBD is up to last month- and they are the ones given the ability to prescribe? We need education of patients to arm them with knowledge. We need education of doctors to make decisions that make sense.

Imaging methods are an effective technique to diagnose certain conditions of low back pain. However, it is not necessary in all cases of low back pain. The majority of low back cases do not require imaging although certain red flags may trigger the need to consider imaging.
