Have you read the latest report from the Canadian Impact Investing Working Group (CIIWG): "Scaling Impact Investing in Canada Through Mobilizing Asset Owners." This comprehensive roadmap features 18 actionable recommendations designed to accelerate impact investing across the country. In 2023, a group of investors convened to work together to address challenges facing asset owners in deploying capital through impact investing. The CIIWG, led by Fondaction, commissioned this research to better understand the drivers and opportunities for Canadian asset owners to allocate capital to scale the impact investing market with integrity. The Canadian impact investing industry is active. From 2015 to 2023, the estimated AUM (Assets under management) grew 56% to CAD $14 B. The potential to grow is three to four times that, to CAD 46 B, by 2030. "If we want to change finance and finance change, it starts with the intentions and values held by investors and beneficiaries," says Stephan Morency of Fondaction. This exercise is being conducted jointly with the Autorité des marchés financiers (Québec), which is leading a similar analysis with regulated institutions in Quebec. Having said that we are curious to know why some Canadian ( and foreign) pension funds are reluctant to invest more in Canada? Our friend Jim Leech has an interesting answer! "Money has a long memory," says Jim Leech, so when governments break promises, change policies or cancel contracts, their jurisdiction gets a reputation as an unreliable place to invest. He also points to eliminating persistent barriers to interprovincial trade, reducing government control of the economy such as Crown corporations, de-risking investments through investment by i.e. the Canada Infrastructure Bank, and offering tax incentives for investment. "Don't put it on the backs of pensioners." It will be interesting if Steven Poloz, former Governor of Bank of Canada could also find other explanations when he will proceed with his consultations over the coming months ! Long-term fundamentals remain very attractive for Cameco - Denis Taillefer, CFA, Senior Portfolio Manager at Caldwell Investment Management, discussed with Amber Kanwar on BNN Bloomberg's Trading Day the latest on the markets and specifically Cameco. Yesterday, Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada released its updated population projections for Canada. StatCan appears to assume the federal government is entirely successful in reaching its non-permanent resident (NPR) reduction target in its medium scenario. Instead, it's high population growth scenario is closer to the Bank's and our own baseline projection, which assumes the NPR reduction target is not fully met. The federal government has appointed Maryse Bertrand as chair of the board of directors of PSP Investments. Ms. Bertrand takes over from Martin Glynn, who will remain on the board until a new director has been appointed. Ms. Bertrand also chairs the board of governors of McGill University, which voted unanimously in December to divest from all direct holdings in major fossil fuel companies. There is no indication that Ms. Bertrand holds any board or executive position at—or owes a conflicting fiduciary duty to—any fossil fuel company. The same cannot be said for her fellow PSP director Miranda Hubbs, who sat on the board of Imperial Oil, a Canadian subsidiary of ExxonMobil, last year when the oil company chose not to warn local First Nations and the wider public about massive, months-long tailings pond leaks at its Kearl facility in northern Alberta. As chair of the Imperial board's committee for community collaboration and engagement, Ms. Hubbs had additional oversight over this decision. A group of PSP beneficiaries generated substantial media coverage last year when they called on the federal cabinet to remove Ms. Hubbs from their pension fund manager’s board. The PSP and Imperial websites each still list Ms. Hubbs as a member of their respective boards. But the pension fund’s annual report reveals that another director with deep ties to the fossil fuel sector, Judy Fairburn, left the PSP board in October 2023, only a month after being appointed. As it looks for a new director, PSP Investments should seek candidates with climate expertise who can navigate the global transition to zero emissions, and avoid candidates who are beholden to the fossil fuel industry. https://lnkd.in/d4e6uRA4

BDC has supported the evolution of the VC ecosystem for over a decade now. Our action is obviously deployed through capital, but also by the production of reliable and detailed data on the industry. For the first time, this year, our report on the Canadian venture capital landscape includes regional data to help us understand disparities, but most importantly, identify opportunities do to better. Again, this year, while the industry continues to face challenges, I want to highlight the resilience and progress it demonstrated over the past decade.
