Decentralised Energy Canada (DEC) and the City of Medicine Hat launched the Energy Innovation Challenge, a three-year, $2.4-million initiative aimed at empowering small and medium-sized Canadian businesses to overcome commercialization obstacles and bring their innovations to market. The Challenge was launched to support small businesses with promising decentralized energy solutions. QUESTION: WHEN IS AN ASSET WELL AND TRULY AN ASSET? ANSWER: WHEN GOOD DATA MAKES IT "INTELLIGENT". Think about this: across western Canada oil and gas companies own and operate literally thousands upon thousands of “assets” upon which their operational management efficiencies rely. But what differentiates them as real assets – from potential liabilities – is the data quality used to underpin their true asset value. In other words, “asset intelligence” is a critical factor in ensuring efficient and effective management of ever-complexifying asset bases. In this #thoughtleadership article by Jen Roney, Brian Hall, president of GDM Inc. and I reflect on the importance of asset-level data being effectively curated by the right partners. As Hall notes, it's a combination of the right data, meeting the right technology, for the right questions at the right time...to ensure risks of all types are mitigated. “It’s critical to have that holistic view,” says Hall. “Without that understanding, how can you handle more specific workflows, such as asset integrity workflows, relative to risk considerations, regulatory requirements, and compliance?” GDM Inc. and geoLOGIC systems ltd. are long-time data partners and allies. Such partnerships exponentially supercharge data integrity for clients, he adds. “There’s no question that the level of asset intelligence we offer can provide a strategic competitive advantage,” says Hall. “But our partnerships in the industry and how these strong collaborations benefit our clients is equally advantageous.” In our discussions, I made the point "intelligent" asset data is a powerful form of capital, particularly at a time when so much human knowledge capital has left the industry in a relatively compressed time frame. It's a knowledge vacuum good data can readily fill. “Data is knowledge capital,” says Whitelaw. “It’s intellectual capital, and it’s critical for the younger generation of leaders to recover all that data. Using PostgreSQL, I developed Grid Atlas, used by tens of thousands of people daily in Alberta’s energy sector. More recently, I launched Alberta Well Finder (https://lnkd.in/gPPwaVyr), which makes use of a cloud-native version of PostgreSQL in the form of Supabase, which is incredible and also offers auth, storage and a bunch of others things.
