A lot of Canadian founders are getting robbed. Yup, you read that right. If you’re a founder that: 1️⃣ Generates revenue in USD 2️⃣ Or, has raised USD funds and if you’re operating in Canada, chances are you need to convert some of those USD funds to CAD to pay your operating expenses or if you’re lucky, maybe you have a cash balance that you want to put away in a GIC for some nice interest. Founders: how are you currently converting your currency? I love our Canadian banks, don’t get me wrong, but they take a massive bite out of your profits when it comes to foreign exchange. DO NOT TRADE CURRENCY WITH YOUR BANKS. Sorry to all my bankers reading this! I know so many founders who learned this lesson the hard way and hopefully this post will save a few of you from making that mistake. Moral of the story? Go find yourself an awesome FX trader. Let's talk buzzy Shopify limitations: default package size leads to inaccurate shipping rates. Q: Shopify, please let us assign certain packages to different products or shipping profiles! There is no reason in 2024 that we can't have this basic feature. A: simply assigning packages to products or shipping profiles is a good feature but will be never enough since packaging is complicated and unique. It's worth taking into account at least combining items in a single packaging and this will require an additional feature. Depending on the cart content the entire order can be packed in a different ways, which can dramatically affect shipping costs. Also consider, that items can be packed by dimensions and weight, by weight only, by product qty. Some items cannot be packed together while others must be packed together... We see all those packaging scenarios when interacting with our app users. And if you consider all those packaging factors and scenarios, then the feature doesn't look that simple anymore, right? So I wouldn't blame Shopify for not having this feature and rather give space to app developers, because it is really massive. In Calcurates we have spent a lot of time building our Smart Packaging feature for Shopify that now covers many different scenarios and it's still not perfect. 🔗 Source: https://lnkd.in/dpnXpYkV

Do you believe technology drives marketing, or does marketing drive technology? Today, I had a meeting with a Canadian agency working with clients who adopted a headless Shopify solution. After analyzing Google Search Console, we noticed a significant drop in traffic on the exact day the migration from one platform to Shopify headless occurred. This issue isn't with Shopify as a platform, nor with headless technology itself. The problem was that basic elements like canonical URLs, sitemaps, and robots.txt were not properly configured. The business lost a lot of organic traffic simply because the technology was implemented solely from a development perspective. Losing everything in one day is a phenomenal mistake. The big lesson here is that every time you go live, you must analyze the risks. You need to evaluate the technology being used: Can you support it quickly enough? Can you implement changes and respond to issues fast enough? For this specific client, the use of headless was unnecessary. Adopting headless technology without a clear reason is probably a huge mistake. It could cost you money, time, and additional expenses.

Over the weekend, Tobi, the founder and CEO of Shopify, discussed the major reason investors passed on Shopify in the early days : market size. I remember that financing round, & I remember having the same concern, & making the same mistake. Living in the valley & driving on 101, the billboards & logo-adorned headquarters of successful companies provide a daily infusion of all the mistakes in I’ve made in guessing how a company or a market might evolve. Years later, I listened as Bill Gurley shared his thoughts about market size. He asked himself a question : whether the startup was increasing, decreasing, or maintaining the market size? (I can’t seem to find the link - but I have it in my notes!) I added that question to my diligence list when meeting startups. Now much later, having seen many companies create categories or reinvigorate aging ones, the question I ask myself has evolved. It’s not as the market size large enough? Instead, it the question is : do we believe this company can create the market? Market size is the output of all the players marketing, selling, building. Their efforts alter, distort, & juice the supply/demand curves of macroeconomics. It’s not a given - not an output or a steady-state CAGR. Often it’s the startups that engender the demand, change the market dynamics, & make markets massive by taking risks with products. When done right, these founders create category-defining businesses like Shopify (now worth $90b)!
