This is a revealing transaction from several perspectives. First, this is an all- Quebec initiative. All the parties are based in/headquartered in 'la belle province.' Second, as Ted Liu points out, there is a very heavy concentration of federal and provincial government and government-linked LP's. Third, the net result of this investment will be to re-inforce the bona fides of both the federal and provincial government on the clean energy front - where both levels of government have had their commitment to this sector called into question. Fourth, this investment, in part, reflects Quebec's relative inability to attract US and other foreign investment vis-a-vis other leading provincial jurisdictions such as Ontario and British Columbia - which some might attribute to the heavy hand of government. Fifth, one might wonder where the missing and leading Quebec-based corporations with interests in 'clean' are(Bombardier, AtkinsRealis, Power Corp., CN and CP, Alcan, National Bank, Desjardins). Sixth, possible unintended consequences of this investment include: reinforcing the perception that clean sector investments are only appealing to government and quasi-government investing entities(and not the private sector) and that Quebec gets special treatment, not accorded other regions of the country.

I do not believe that cashflow from international investments justifies losing $300M less than a year after investing. But that's what the Caisse did. Because Quebec couldn't offer any cash flowing investment grade returns? Or because there's less oversight and blame overseas? Because any way I look at it, the Northvolt debacle (bankruptcy of ParentCo) has Quebec sticking its head in the sand and pretending it doesn't have to write down its investment. That was $300M of post tax revenue. Gone. And no one is responsible or accountable. Oh and Caisse is under investigation for bribery in India. How can we cry wolf about a lack of local productivity when our pension funds keep investing in others? Local SMB are starved for growth financing (unless real estate backed), but we have troves of cash for speculative EV factories when the world is slowing on EV. Ouff. I'm not saying "fuck globalization". I am saying - the problems at Northvolt existed in Nov 2023. We missed the risk. And now, we commited the cardinal sin of investing - we lost capital. And imagine what Quebecois businesses could have built with $300M, and how many people that would have employed. And the beat goes on...

Everyday I work with other investors -- including many Americans -- and evaluate early stage Canadian and American companies. The governments' proposed changes to capital gains in the #Budget2024 is a huge mistake. The result will be less investment dollars for early stage Canadian companies. Further, many companies will be compelled to move to the US for capital. This is already a worrying trend, this will make it worse. The government argues that this tax change will only affect 40,000 Canadians - hogwash. The real effect will be felt by the 40,000 entrepreneurs who struggle even harder to raise and justify their Canadian status. I reject the proposed changes to capital gains in the budget. Stand with me. Speak up for our entrepreneurs. Speak up for Canadian small business. If we can't invest in startups with a reasonable tax burden, we'll be forced to do so elsewhere.

TSX: OLY has a lot of future runway to sustain its position in the TSX30. Management has signaled earlier in the year that it is in the final stages of gaining regulatory approval to enter the Ontario trust market. Ontario represents about 40% of the total capital markets in Canada, which increases the total addressable market for OLY by that amount. Considering that Trust Services represent 70% of OLY's total revenue, Ontario entry should have meaningful positive impact on future revenue trajectories. Expected approvals are likely fairly imminent and the company has indicated that it will market aggressively in Ontario. Institutional investors are building positions ahead of potential announcements and the current analyst share price target of $134.00 (implied 34% return) does not consider Ontario market entry. The company also offers a 7.2% yield which is 2.6x the average in the TSX30 ranking. 🚀

Kicking off Canadian MSB Association’s spring training event with FINTRAC Canada | CANAFE Canada’s #MSB sector lead, Guillaume Giguere. Many team members are here, and if you are too, I would encourage you to say hello and ask questions. We’re glad that he and his team are here to answer questions! Some highlights: ⭐️ there is a specialized #MSB team that will liaise with industry, conduct exams, etc. This replaces the regional teams. ⭐️expect new systems, including MSB Registration, to come online soon. ⭐️the examination toolkit will be expanded, and we can expect additional touchpoints, including automated feedback on reporting, and benchmarkin using MSB data. ⭐️exams will still exist 😅 but there will be other touchpoints as well, and more clarity related to administrative monetary penalties (AMPs) when they occur is expected (5-6% of exams currently result in AMPs). ⭐️ in recent exams, it’s been noted that policies, procedures and risk assessments need to be specific to the business, and that MSB registration information needs to be kept up to date. ⭐️ there has been an increase in ‘unusual’ MSBs trying to register, and more information requests at registration/onboarding, and beyond, are expected to combat this.
