New research today by The Conference Board of Canada that shows pensioners in Ontario who have defined benefit pension plans contributed $34.6 billion to the province's GDP in 2023. Pension plans often make the news for how and where they invest their funds. But the Conference Board report highlights an important, yet often overlooked, economic contribution that retirees who are part of DB plans make to their communities. The report verifies that if retirees have confidence in their financial security, it boosts consumer spending and drives economic growth at the local level (especially in smaller communities.) You have developed an amazing platform to help Canadians as they age in so many areas from healthcare to mental health to finding purpose, the list goes on. I know Zael Miransky, CFP, President, CEO and I are glad to be on this mission with you. As we have an ever increasing amount of people transition to retirement. These are some common questions that we come across with pre-retirees: What do I want to do in retirement? (Travel? Family? Hobbies?) Do I help my kids financially now or later? Who is going to take care of me as I age? We believe that the most important thing for us to understand when working with people is their relationship and attitudes towards money. Financial security is not only having enough money but realizing how you can spend that money. A lot of this is outlined in a financial plan. If you are working with an advisor and don't have a financial plan, ask for one or find a new advisor. Today IG Wealth Management released our seventh annual Financial Confidence Index, shedding light on how Canadians across the country feel about their financial situation and outlook. This year’s findings reveal that, while Canadians’ confidence has stabilized in the post-pandemic era, many are concerned about what might happen in 2025 and how it could impact them. The Index also clearly reinforces the valuable role advice plays: the confidence of those who work with an advisor is 15 points higher than those who do not. Canadian Western Bank today gave us a pretty painful reminder that transparency matters greatly in financial communications. The company announced it has rescheduled its quarterly earnings report to an unspecified date later this month. Now, companies (and banks especially) very rarely reschedule earnings - it’s a matter of trust, law and compliance. But to give no reason for the reschedule on top of it all is even worse. CWB’s stock fell as much as 12 percent after the announcement, and the reason why is the speculation: is there an earnings or revenue restatement coming? Was a quarterly audit lengthier than usual, and why? Is there fraud? Is there an executive departure? Is CWB’s pending sale to National Bank (which also saw its shares fall today) in peril? All this speculation could have been avoided by simply providing the reason for the reschedule in the announcement. But CWB, probably relying on legal advice of some sort, decided to keep quiet. Maybe there is some good reason for the silence, but I don’t see it - and neither does the market.
