Alexi Secures $11 Million USD Series A Funding to Accelerate AI-Powered Legal Technology Innovations Alexi  (www.alexi.com), a Canadian legaltech company and leader in generative AI for legal research and litigation tasks, today announced an $11 million USD ($15 million CAD) Series A fundraise. The round is led by Drive Capital, with participation from existing investors including Draper Associates, and brings Alexi’s total funding to over $20 million. Clio, a Canadian software company that aims to help law practices run more efficiently with its cloud-based technology, has raised $900 million in a Series F round that values the company at $3 billion. The valuation is nearly double the $1.6 billion valuation the Vancouver, British Columbia company achieved in April 2021 when it raised $110 million. Clio, which describes itself as “the operating system for law firms,” recently crossed over $200 million in ARR, up from $100 million ARR in June of 2022 and has been profitable (EBITDA positive) for several years, according to Clio founder and CEO Jack Newton. The company works to simplify law firm management by centralizing client intake, case and document management, and payments, among other things. It is used by over 150,000 legal professionals and recently expanded to the APAC region, as well as gaining more mid-sized law firms as customers, it says. New Enterprise Associates (NEA) led the raise with an investment of over $500 million — its first in the company. New investors Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Sixth Street Growth, CapitalG and Tidemark joined existing backers TCV, JMI Equity, funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price and OMERS to also participate in the financing. Clients now expect faster contract reviews, real-time risk assessments and quicker regulatory guidance, according to "Keeping Pace: Law Firms in the Era of AI-Driven Business," a Law.com Pro Fellows report written by Aaron Boersma. Boersma is an innovation lead with Ford Motor Co., but he produced the report completely independent of, and not connected with, the automotive giant. The report noted that AI also is transforming business practices, as clients increasingly demand value-based models over traditional billable hours. While all the changes spurred by AI might seem unsettling to law firms, to remain competitive they should embrace the technology and make it a core part of their operations, the report said. "To handle the volume and speed of legal work generated by AI-driven businesses, law firms must adopt AI tools to bolster their core capabilities, not to replace them," according to the report, which predicts that AI will allow firms to manage larger workloads with minimal increases in manpower. David Simon, chief legal affairs officer of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, told Law.com that law firms have an obligation to clients to leverage tools like AI that can save time without sacrificing quality. "I expect outside counsel to do everything they can to be as efficient as possible," Simon said, just as he expects them to assign work to an associate when it doesn't require the expertise of a $1,200-an-hour partner. The report notes that while firms that swiftly embrace AI will gain a competitive edge, those that move slowly could affect their viability and become "corporate America's roadblock to growth."
