Local news is a crucial part of a healthy community for several reasons, including the dynamic of municipal politics. If you think about it, local councilors and City Hall play a much bigger direct role in our daily lives than those in the Provincial/State or Federal levels. Reporting on what is relevant, what is changing and everything else in your community is very important regardless of whether you are in a single- media outlet town or a larger city. And it's not just reporting, it is taking politicians to task on the decisions they make or are planning to make. If you do not have local media, no one is doing that. No one. There are many more reasons that local media is essential to healthy communities but that is for another day. As Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Benton Fraser always said on the wonderful TV series Due South, it is always the right time to be polite. And new research shows that is important with our queries to artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots. Research from the RIKEN Center and Waseda University indicates that if we want the most accurate and complete possible response from an AI chatbot we would be wise to include “please” and “thank you” in our prompts. It's great to see our products being used by a record 67 Federal departments and agencies, proving their value across government. Endorsement within the GC: Getting approval from major federal departments and bodies like the Canadian Armed Forces and TBS shows how crucial and reliable our products have become in essential government functions. These endorsements validate our commitment to following government policies and standards. Vision and Principles: A clear vision and core principles are at the heart of our success. With RadioMogul's dramatically-improved new analytics offerings, I've been having a lot of conversations lately with clients and potential clients that cover data, technology & analytics. I always try to avoid tech jargon as much as possible, and focus instead on what the tech can do for their business. Have you tried the new Google ai search though? It answers your questions without taking you to the sites where the info comes from. Maybe they paid up because they need the journalists to train their AIs - and, once the learning is complete, can dump them the way Meta did. So high end journalist organizations need to form an DOC like champagne or Parmesan, and completely wall it off from AI bots. If they don’t do something really soon there will be very little left. As Scott Galloway notes this week - ask you ai to give you a news summary in the voice of The Economist or Reuters. It will. And it’s going to keep getting better. So yeah, it doesn’t look like our law worked out the way we hoped. But the problem is about to get worse. Voice usage is literally exploding -- according to our recent TELUS Digital survey, 81% of Americans use voice technology at least once per week and 25% haver tried it for the first time in the last month (!!). Apple Intelligence and Google AI will revolutionize the human-machine interface on mobile devices, causing it to be multimodal voice first. Fifteen years ago we started talking about "mobile first" design; in 2025 it will become "voice-first" design. From the smallest business to the largest corporation, we all recognize the value of getting your message heard and seen. Canada’s federal government spends hundreds of millions of dollars every year on marketing to share vital information with Canadians. The problem is that most of that money is spent on American digital advertising platforms like Facebook and Instagram (Meta), Google, and others. Tens of millions of Canadian taxpayer money exits Canada and lines the already rich pockets of massive American digital companies. A coalition of Canadian broadcasters is appealing to the federal government to take one simple and common-sense step: commit to spending 70% of the federal government’s marketing money with Canadian radio, television, digital, and print companies. This initiative will put taxpayer money directly into the Canadian economy. It will keep jobs in Canadian media and foster a healthy and vibrant Canadian media ecosystem. This is a simple and common-sense step that requires no legislation or debate. It appeals to voters across the political spectrum, from right to left. It simply makes sense on every level. It also acknowledges that Canadian media operates in a heavily regulated environment, and they are counted upon to contribute millions each year to Canadian cultural development through music, TV, movies, art, and journalism. Canada has a wealth of great radio stations, TV networks, print outlets, and digital platforms. And many Canadian media companies offer advertisers access to the same American digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Google, and others.

I read the full report on the State Of Canadian Publishing. Some key takeaways: - Publishers offering no training for AI but plan to (or already are) leverage AI for marketing and summary blurbs. - Large publishers do not focus on direct sales to consumers, but small and midsized publishers do (not well, but it's a larger part of their revenue stream). - Publishers are still using Facebook to market more than any other social media platform. This last point felt odd to me but then I thought of the market publishers believe they are speaking to and it made more sense. FB has an older demographic and for a long time was a prime marketing platform for books. Publishing is always slow to change course, so the fact that FB is still the primary tool for publishers isn't that surprising. This also explains why publishers aren't offering employees training on AI. It would mean publishers have a clear strategy or at least intend on creating a clear strategy for adopting and leveraging AI and that's not the case. Not yet, at least. *BookNet Canada put together the report.

The damage that AI generated content will have on the news industry isn't a problem of the future, it is happening right now. This article outlines how BNN Breaking mass-produced AI generated news stories that were widely shared by reputable news aggregator sites (Google, MSN, ...). Their business model was simple; feed reputable news stories into an LLM to create a large volume of derivative works. These could then be fine-tuned for click-bait (i.e. positioned in such a way as to grab attention and clicks), fine-tuned to perform well in the aggregator ranking algorithm (which is most likely AI-powered also), or even fine-tuned to respond to trending topics in near real-time. The net result, is a high volume of derivative work, littered with AI-generated falsehoods (hallucinations), reaching social media and mainstream news aggregators. This problem is only going to get worse. I, and countless others, could replicated their business model within a week or two, if I so wished. Thankfully, the vast majority of us have a moral compass that strongly dissuades us from following this path, but we clearly need to do more than just rely on collective morals.
