We can even become numb to the number of decisions we cycle through on an hourly or daily basis, but they add up. I've recently implemented "Decision-Free Sundays", which means that on Sunday I do not make a decision on any matter that doesn't bring me joy. Gradually, I can see how it's helping me be sharper on Monday mornings, which seem to come far too quickly. Thanks Enserva for looking out for its member companies. Using the link posted, I submitted the following comments: Winterhawk Well Abandonment Ltd. is a Canadian company based in Calgary. We are in the business of reducing greenhouse gas emissions for our clients, which are corporations that produce oil and natural gas. Winterhawk offers proprietary technology to help the O&G industry reduce GHG emissions on producing wells, as well as on previously decommissioned wells that have developed methane leaks long after their producing life has ended. Bill C-59 suggests that we and our clients cannot publicly announce the successful reduction of GHGs through the use of our Canadian-developed technology. The question I ask is this: What possible benefit is there to the citizens of Canada to be denied information regarding our country’s progress in cleaning the air we all breath? Please understand that Winterhawk is NOT in the business of producing oil and natural gas. We are not discouraging a transition to sustainable, non-invasive clean energy. However, like many companies in the O&G service and supply sector, we recognize that it will be decades before Canada – and indeed the entire world – will be able to transition away from fossil fuels as the planet’s primary energy source. I am not an engineer (nor a politician), but I will venture to say that long after alternative forms of energy become viable, there will still be a need for plastics and other ubiquitous products derived from hydrocarbons. Hence, the business of extracting hydrocarbons will still exist. I will add that even in the unlikely event that all existing Canadian oil and gas wells were decommissioned, they may still develop methane leaks. Our technology could be used to fix these leaks. But according to Bill C-59 we’re not allowed to state this publicly. I sincerely hope this ill-considered bill is revisited. Cenovus expects oil sands production to reach 600-610 Mbbls/d in 2024, with key assets including Christina Lake, Foster Creek, Lloydminster Thermals, and Sunrise. Operating costs have been reduced to $10.50 – $12.50 per barrel, reflecting a 12% decrease at the midpoint. Optimization projects, such as the Foster Creek expansion and the Narrows Lake tie-back, are expected to add significant production through 2024 and 2025. The company emphasizes cost leadership and efficiency, with further reductions in operational expenses. Canadians just paid $34 billion for TMX that has resulted in: ❌ 🛢️that does not meet spec at new ports ❌ differentials that have INCREASED due to poorer quality ❌ no buyer that won’t be #redwashing ❌ increased liabilities, yet understood Despite over 20 years of studies and evidence that the operations are toxic to residents, wildlife, and habitats the oil sand liabilities have accumulated to: ❌ $130 billion ❌ 105,000 🏈 fields of disturbance ❌ 1.6 trillion liters of waste 💦 ❌ 6300% understated emissions If the Government of Canada kicks this can down the road for 10 MORE YEARS, this national disaster will be: ❌ ~$400 billion (12.5% increase/year) ❌ 125,000 🏈 fields of disturbance (could be way more if Suncor is allowed to develop McClelland). ❌ 3 trillion liters of waste 💦 (assuming current rate of 200 billion/year) ❌ 🇨🇦 will be responsible for breaking the earth’s planetary system, its warming will move us to beyond a point of no return. This $12 million solution from the Feds is disgusting. Instead, Canada needs to: ✅ halt any new mining, drilling, and freshwater use ✅ require the Pathways Alliance to stand up 2050 clean up plans, make them prove they can and will clean up this mess. There are solutions available. ✅ clean up tailings and begin Indigenous led restoration of the Athabasca system ✅ make the polluter pay today, trigger the MFSP and secure financing The future of the oil sands in carbon materials AFTER we achieve socioecological stability. Here's my latest column with Jock Finlayson in the Globe and Mail: "To sustain our standard of living, Canada sells exports in international markets. Exports generate jobs and earnings that circulate through the non-export economy. They provide the means to pay for the vast array of imports that consumers want and need, from cars to clothing to high-end electronics. Companies also import essential parts and inputs for their operations. The mix of goods and services that any market economy sells abroad ultimately reflects the activities where it has a “comparative advantage.” This principle boils down to a country being better off by “playing to its strengths” rather than trying to be a “jack of all trades.” Countries benefit the most from international trade when they specialize in exporting goods and services they can produce at a lower cost and/or higher quality relative to other countries. An analogy would be that a wonderful doctor is better off focusing on treating patients and buying (importing) their food from a skilled farmer rather than dividing her time between being a doctor and growing her own food. Natural resource-based goods play an outsized role in our export portfolio. Added together, energy, non-metallic minerals and related products, metal ores, forest products and agri-food make up roughly half of all exports. Along with aerospace, these are the only broad categories where Canada posts trade surpluses. In its latest “scorecard” report, the Coalition for a Better Future observes that “over the past decade, Canada recorded a cumulative trade deficit of $130-billion. Had it not been for energy, our trade deficit would have been about $1-trillion.”"

Today’s report from Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) assumes the industry takes no meaningful action to reduce emissions. This is misleading. The #OilAndGas sector has the technology needed to meet the cap. Our research shows that the proposed 2030 #EmissionsCap is achievable without impacting production.
