I am increasingly worried that instead of addressing systemic challenges we're choosing to direct our ire on personas (e.g., zero-interest PMs). I understand Casey Winters's statement (and have spoken with him about it), and I understand Ed Biden's sentiment. But... Someone hired those PMs. Someone funded those companies. Someone set expectations for those PMs. A leader benefitted (or didn't from their work). Someone had the job to mentor those PMs, and share business context and the strategy (assuming one even existed). Zero-interest rates impacted their companies, and may have in turn set expectations for their roles. This makes it about the PMs vs. the perverse incentives in companies during zero interest rates. Also creeping into these descriptions are character judgements on individuals ("Don't feel accountable"). Do we really believe there is some epidemic of people who don't feel accountable vs. environments where accountability is increasingly unsafe, unhealthy, or otherwise? These statements are giving a get-out-of-jail card to people presiding over (and shaping) these environments.

Most companies I speak with are already processing at least a few ACH payments in BC or GP, but they are often unaware of the risks they are potentially exposing themselves to... It's a common theme when I get on a call with a potential customer. Initially, I used to let it slide, assuming they were aware of the risks. However, the more conversations I have, the more I realize that many are not aware of the potential holes in their security: 1. Direct Access to Vendor Banking Info: This happens both during the initial entry of the data and while storing this sensitive info directly in GP or BC. 2. NACHA File Handling: At the end of the day, NACHA files are just text files that can be easily modified, opened, or stored on an insecure computer. To boost your security: 1. Encrypt Vendor Data: Keep this data obfuscated from all users if possible. 2. Encrypt NACHA Files: Secure your payment files to prevent unauthorized access and modifications. 3. Utilize Direct ACH via SFTP: This method not only encrypts file transfers but also minimizes human handling, reducing risk. Having been exposed to the ACH process through Fidesic, I assumed this was the norm with other companies as well, but I've found that most clients do not have these measures in place. Alex Chung started Giphy from his friend's couch. The story of how Facebook acquired Giphy for $400M. Giphy was founded by Alex Chung (a serial entrepreneur) and his friend Jace Cooke in February 2013. Previously, Chung sold a social media network, The Fridge, to Google and worked on projects backed by Y Combinator, Intel, and Yahoo. It began as a side project. Alex wanted to create a repository for gifs—something that Alex thought would be cool to put it on the internet. The problem was simple → Help users interact and engage in more fun way in conversations. Within hours of its launch, Giphy had reached 30,000 users. Within weeks of launch, Alex received a $1 million investment offer from Betaworks, one of the founders of Kickstarter. Alex with his 5 friends started working on growing Giphy. Year 1 growth: - 3 months: 3 million users - 6 months: 30 million users - 8 months: 300 million users In 2013, Giphy had expanded beyond being just a search engine. They integrated with: - Facebook, allowing users to post, embed, and share GIFs - Twitter, enabling users to share GIFs simply by sharing a GIF's URL Giphy raised a total of $150 million in VC funding. By 2016, Giphy had grown to: - $300 million valuation - 100 million daily active users - Serving over 1 billion GIFs per day Since Facebook accounted for 50% of Giphy's total user traffic, it led to a strong collaboration between the companies. The Facebook acquisition made sense. Through GIFs, Facebook could tap into: - hot topics and trends on an ongoing basis - the growing popularity of a new app or service Having already integrated it with Instagram, Meta (formerly Facebook) acquired Giphy for $400 million in 2020. But…. the ending didn’t go as planned. UK regulators forced Facebook to let go of Giphy over competition concerns. In May 2023, Shutterstock bought Giphy for $53 million, far less than the $400 million Meta had paid. Today, Giphy has 10 billion+ pieces of content and 1.7 billion+ users. If I was an A player / high performer seeking employment right now, I'd look for jobs at organizations running one of these business operating systems: Scaling Up: A Gazelles Company, Metronomics, or EOS - Entrepreneurial Operating System. There are several reasons for this: -Core Values-Driven CEOs: Many will have CEOs that actually live their company core values (and insist everyone else does, too), giving you the best chance possible to thrive -A Player Team: Because these organizations are more likely to use Topgrading to hire, you'd be part of a drama-free, A Player team (do not underestimate the importance of this; if you've had bad team members or have been dismayed by workplace drama, you understand) -Get Paid More: Compensation will likely be at the high end for your role because these organizations understand the value the A Player creates -5D Focused Leadership Teams: Leadership teams are focused on Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions of a Team, resulting in less workplace politics (doing the wrong thing for the wrong reason) and way less stupidity from leaders All of these things will result in the most fulfilling working environment you've ever had. Remember the "Great resignation"? That may as well have been a myth to my clients. Why? Nobody leaves an A player team. NOBODY. That was a problem for companies that don't live there core values and that tolerate B and C players. Unfortunately, there isn't a public list of these companies. That would be one incredible A Player recruitment website. But there are a few things A players can do to find these employers: 1. Reach out to the organizations above to find out if they know of companies in your area using their systems/tools 2. Reach out to your local chapter of Entrepreneurs' Organization or Young Presidents' Organization - that's where the self-aware leaders using these systems/tools congregate ***Important interview question all candidates for all candidates to ask: Is your CEO a member of EO or YPO? Self-aware leaders tend to join these peer learning associations, and that's the kind of leader you generally want as an employer/leader.*** 3. Reach out to Metronomics, Scaling Up, or EOS coaches in your area to find out which of their clients is currently hiring. Transitioning to a new role at Shopify has been a journey filled with both excitement and challenges. Here are a few key learnings from my experience so far. Prioritizing Information: One of the biggest challenges has been sifting through the vast amount of information available. With so much happening across the organization and an abundance of content to absorb, distinguishing between what's actionable and what's just for context is crucial. I've learned the importance of seeking early guidance from my team to help prioritize effectively. This approach has been invaluable in focusing on what truly matters and ensuring my contributions have the most impact. It's about striking a balance between being informed and overwhelmed, and I've found that open communication with colleagues has been key to navigating this. By actively engaging in discussions and leveraging the expertise of those around me, I've been able to streamline my focus and direct my efforts where they are needed most. Embracing Change and Adaptability: This is a dynamic environment where some applications and processes have been around for ages, while others may have been introduced just the month before I started. Some systems endure because they work exceptionally well, while others might be in desperate need of a rewrite, refactor, or replacement. This mix of tradition and innovation requires a willingness to ask more questions than anyone else in the room. It's about understanding the rationale behind existing systems and being game to exploring new approaches. Through all of this, I am realizing that change, while daunting, offers a chance for growth and reinvention. I was ready for a new challenge, and I got exactly what I was looking for. The supportive and collaborative spirit of the team has made this transition not only possible but rewarding. A private proposal in beautiful BC, surrounded by friends to celebrate afterward. She would set up a few poses, instruct her to close her eyes, then… cue the moment. Part 2 of how we hosted Toronto Tech Fest with over 10,000+ RSVPs in our very first year with $0 starting budget. 🤩 Vision: From the beginning we wanted to create an amazing experience that could scale and make a huge impact for the community. 🎯 Tactic: Make it incredibly easy for hosts to opt into, and execute, co-hosting their own event 💡 The Plan: Actively help hosts resolve their most pressing issues and create momentum for action. 🗝️ The Secret: There were three main challenges that we found hosts to have: event initiation (theme selection, headcount), venue selection, and promotion. By providing 1:1 consultations and Luma page creation services we helped to resolve event initiation. By building a bridge to local venues over the past year, and sharing those relationships, we helped to resolve venue selection. And by creating multiple channels to reach the community (through our event lists, event calendars, and social media) we helped to resolve promotion. The result is over 255+ co-hosts, hosting over 90+ events during the week. 🥡The Takeaway: Take an active approach with hosts looking to create events at your unconference. Hiring a Product Manager? It's Like Having a General Contractor for Your Product! If you're building a new product or enhancing an existing one, having a skilled product manager on board can be invaluable - just like hiring a general contractor is essential for any major home construction project. As detailed in the article "Product Manager Job: What They Do and Why They're Important", product managers play a pivotal role in driving product success. They bridge the gap between the technical teams building the product and the business teams defining requirements based on customer needs. A product manager is responsible for: Defining the product vision and strategy Prioritizing features based on customer impact Managing the product roadmap and release process Gathering customer feedback to inform future iterations In essence, product managers are the "general contractors" orchestrating all the moving pieces required to deliver a successful product to market efficiently. You can build a product without one, just like you can take a DIY approach to home renovation. For the last 9 months, a couple of my team members and I have been working double shifts at Vertocity. We've been validating and building an idea we had 9 months ago. From 10 AM to 7 PM, we focused on our regular work/business, and during the nights, we poured our energy into innovation, our side hustle, or whatever you may call it. Before launching our SaaS product, we achieved a revenue stream of 30 Lakh ARR. So, what have we built? An AI B2B SaaS Conversation AI product that boosts productivity and automates mundane tasks for revenue teams at staffing and recruitment companies. We didn't plan our GTM. We didn't do initial market research. We somehow re-invented the product-building wheel. 1/ We faced an issue with our revenue teams at Vertocity and built an internal tool to tackle it. 2/ Later, we realized this is a common issue for most revenue teams. 3/We emailed 40 founder friends across domains, showed a demo of the tool, and asked if they would pay for it. 4/The response was amazing. We then started searching for our Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). 5/We identified two ICPs and decided to focus on one: revenue teams at staffing & recruitment firms. 6/We spoke with 3 firms, each with an average headcount of 200+, even before building an MVP. 7/One of them was eager to use our product, and we deployed the MVP to their team. 8/The results were amazing, and we signed an agreement with them. And just like that, we got our first client for our conversational AI product before even launching it. We're excited and very cautious about how the next few weeks will unfold. Question to product ops people (I'm looking at you May Wong Graham Reed ) Something I rarely see spoken about as a responsibility of product ops is hiring PMs. I feel like your product ops people understand what makes a good PM, especially in the specific context of your company, as well if not better than anyone. If the role of product ops is to make your product org a slick well oiled machine then adding the right people feels like it should fit squarely within that wheelhouse and is one of the highest leverage activities that can be done. I'm not suggesting that they should own the whole process end to end but it feels to me as though it's a place where they could add a lot of value.

Early in my career I worked for a company whose business model (in retrospect) was selling a dollar for 99 cents. The problem with these types of businesses is that they have infinite scale, but can never be profitable. Recognizing a business operating in this mode can be easy (MoviePass, Jokr) or tough (Uber certainly looked like it would never turn a profit). Which category does OpenAI fall into? My guess is the former. They have a wildly expensive product with no reasonable timeline to making that profitable. They're burning billions of dollars while receiving substantial subsidies from Microsoft for model training and execution and their product, while cool, is running on borrowed time. At the end of the day, how many of their subscribers would stick around if they were forced to pay the fully-loaded cost of using ChatGPT? The egress of top-tier talent along with the eagerness with which businesses whose own valuations are deeply tied to OpenAI (Microsoft, Nvidia) are ready to pour money into this funding round, IMO, is indicative of OpenAI's relatively dire position. Even if OpenAI ultimately fails, it doesn't mean that generative AI is dead. Far from it -- there is clearly value in the technology just nobody has either unlocked the absolutely killer use case or figured out how to bring the costs down far enough to make the current offering compelling in the long-term.

It was so much fun to kick off the #BestBuyCreatorCatalyst summit today in Toronto, sponsored by Best Buy Canada 🇨🇦 I talked about being a software engineer but also an author, fashion designer, wine bar co-owner and now *perfumer* for Prima Dona Elixirs ⚗️ I talked about the 3 things I use AI for in my creative process every week: 1. AI to brainstorm and research: “What are the top, heart and base notes on Tom Ford’s Vanille Fatale?” And “what are the common base notes of my perfume collection in this photo” 2. AI to recap my meetings and identify most important things to get done this week “What are 5 things I need to get done by Friday to hit these customer orders” as well as scheduling prompts that run weekly. 3. AI to create invoices and contracts based on existing ones. “Using this contract from <hotel chain X> last year, make me a contract for 50 vials of the new Troublemaker perfume priced at <Y> per unit.” I *also* talked about how the next-gen of AI won’t be dorky little prompt boxes but instead will be input like voice and vision. We need creatives and creators to design user experiences that reach people in cool and creative ways. For that we need people who’ve done industrial design and know HCI to help us figure out the boundaries between creep and cool.
