Full disclosure, I'm having a LOT of feelings about what happened today at the end of the inaugural Canadian Academy for Addiction Psychiatry Conference. As a woman with lived experience, a clinician, and now an executive healthcare administrator, this is not the way to effect change. Full stop. Demonizing healthcare providers (and btw, what's being shared about these folks is entirely inaccurate) is not the way forward. We need to work together. We need all the voices. AND. We need to understand that there is place and space for ALL interventions in service of MHSU folks. Can you imagine what we'd accomplish if we stopped fighting with each other and grounded ourselves in what we ALL care about -- THOSE WE SERVE. If those spreading this propaganda actually attended the conference they would have heard that we ALL have questions about how this might work AND how to do it in a way that reflects a commitment to trauma informed, safe, whole person care. I hope we can continue the conversation in a way that's respectful, solution focused, and meets the needs of our complex MHSU population. INCIVILITY IN THE CLASSROOM I caught this story last night on The National on CBC, about the growing incivility in our classsrooms. The challenges outlined in the story and in this article are a wake-up call. The increase in classroom incivility since the pandemic reflects more than just behavioral shifts—it highlights the growing gap in our ability to connect, empathize, and work together as a society. At GenWell, we believe the solution lies in reconnecting young people to the importance of social health—the understanding that our relationships are as critical to our well-being as physical and mental health. Social health is the foundation for learning empathy, compassion, civility, and respect, all of which are essential to thriving in school, work, and life. COVID-19 disrupted more than just routines; it fractured opportunities for face-to-face connection that teach us how to engage with one another. Remote learning, isolation, and increased screen time have left many young people struggling to navigate social settings with the same ease and understanding as before. GenWell is on a mission to empower young people with the knowledge and tools to build meaningful connections—through our workshops, young people learn the facts about the impact of social isolation, the little things that they can do each day to improve their social health and how this can lead to a greater mental and physical well-being. We educate classrooms and schools as a group because we recognize that when it comes to social health, one cannot solve it alone, and thus, a group or societal approach is the only solution. Finally, we follow up our workshops with a series of tools and campaigns that can help young people catalyze their social connections more often because they have an excuse, reminder and permission to do so. When we make connection a priority in our schools and communities, we build the skills and habits needed for civil, compassionate, and collaborative societies. It's time to catalyze action. There’s been a lot of debate lately about whether we should be focused on harm reduction or treatment and recovery services, but another critical aspect is being overlooked: investments in mental health. While 1 in 5 Canadians experience mental illness each year, mental health services remain severely underfunded. Without meaningful investment, we’re failing to provide the comprehensive care people need to heal. We’ve failed to tackle the root causes that lead individuals to substance use in the first place —poverty, trauma, and lack of access to social supports. A holistic approach is essential, one that treats not only the symptoms but addresses these deeper, systemic issues. Focusing solely on harm reduction or treatment isn’t enough. Mental health support must be at the heart of this conversation. Last week, the federal government took an important step on the Canada Disability Benefit by launching the program in the 2024 budget. However, there was a collective sense of profound disappointment as the funding allocation and roll-out details are deeply inadequate in providing the support people living with disabilities so urgently need. The principle of the Canada Disability Benefit extends far beyond wealth redistribution or being a social safety net. It is an investment in people that has a series of positive ramifications, not only on empowering people with disabilities to live a life of dignity, but also on our economy, health, education, and social systems. People living with disabilities face a poverty rate twice as high as the rest of Canada and are severely impacted by the growing affordability and cost of living crisis. One in seven people who access food banks nationally rely on provincial disability income support. In many provinces, this means living more than $800 below the poverty line each month. Daily Bread Food Bank, along with a coalition of partners across the country, will continue to advocate for a benefit that achieves its stated purpose of reducing poverty among people with disabilities, and operates from a broad and inclusive definition of disability to ensure that those who need support can effectively access it. #cdnpoli #Canada #CanadaDisabilityBenefit #endpoverty

Thanks Marina Dawson for tagging me. Corporate Partnership can be a tricky landscape for nonprofits, and this article really highlights quite a few of the reasons why. It is always my recommendation that charities are clear internally - and in the best case prepared to do so externally - around who they will partner with and why. We call it their guiding principles of corporate partnership. In my opinion, not all partnerships make sense and I want nonprofits to be thoughtful about it. Having these clear principles does not stop individuals from expressing their concerns with a partnership that they don't believe aligns or is appropriate, but it does provide context on the charity side. It should demonstrate, at minimum, that the nonprofit has entered into the partnership thoughtfully and with intent. An article like this is a good moment to pause and consider - could this happen to us? And if it did, what would we do? Hopefully, have a gracious and clear response.
