I'm excited to announce EthPay, our project for the 2024 ETHToronto & ETHWomen Hackathon. EthPay addresses the challenges of international money transfers, particularly when traveling abroad. We all know the struggle of being in a foreign country with only your native currency, facing the hassle of finding a currency exchange, or the burden of paying outrageous fees to convert your money to the local currency. EthPay simplifies this process by leveraging cryptocurrency as an intermediary. Our application seamlessly converts your currency into a cryptocurrency (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) within our platform, and then converts that cryptocurrency into the native currency of the payment receiver. This process not only makes international payments more convenient but also significantly reduces the fees involved. The Bank of Montreal (one of Canada's largest banks, with nearly $1tn in assets) recently disclosed that it is holding 4 of the spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the US in January - link in the comments. Nothing particularly remarkable about that - ongoing 13F filings with the SEC highlight a growing wave of institutional crypto adoption. (The "smart money" is finally wising-up). What's interesting is the large number of BOM's customers that are pretty outraged by the double-standards exhibited by the bank - these customers have previously been de-banked by BOM for attempting to send their own money to crypto exchanges! It will be interesting to see what happens in the UK in H2 2024 after our own spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs launch on the London Stock Exchange. Pretty much all of the major UK retail banks limit transfers to crypto exchanges and have closed customer accounts for the same reasons as BOM (and still do). (For your protection, of course! 😉 ) We'll be watching Natwest, LBG, HSBC, Barclays etc. 👀

One of my core belief - "Allow the magic to work. Believe! Get up, raise your hand or just atleast "want" for it." And when Florent reached out with an opportunity to speak at the Blockchain North's Crypto Canadians Twitter Space happening every thursday, I thought why not? I've not only heard about the great things the team at Blockchain North is doing but also, witnessed their magic first hand at the Blockchain Futurist Conference. But with my afternoon packed with meetings, I had to unfortunately pass. However, it kept lingering in the back of my mind. I think I wished on it a little too much, that two of my meetings miraculously got rescheduled. And guess what I did as soon as I found out? I dropped Florent a text at LITERALLY 10 PM saying I coincidentally became available. To my surprise, he immediately confirmed! And that is how I ended up spending my thursday afternoon on the 5th, in a virtual space full of intellectual people including Mahad Mohamed of TAX PARTNERS, Marc Lijour of IEEE Blockchain Technical Community, Florent and Liborio Bobby of Blockchain North alongside some really amazing people that joined the space. But what truly was more amazing than the people were the topics of discussion. We started with "Canadian court orders $1.2M Bitcoin loan repayment", sharing our takes on what it'd mean for the industry in terms of global adoption & legal recognition. My favorite part about the news was how the judge took an old-fashioned cause of action with a modern twist as the loan to be repaid was in Bitcoin. Next up, we talked about "CRA finds that the deposit of crypto into pooling vehicles and subsequent exchanges are dispositions". Bobby raised a very interesting point — How each transaction is taxable instead of how much we are making out of the prize pool and how recording a million transaction is a bit too much, causing a resistance towards the adoption. We also touched "The crypto industry spent nearly $120 million to influence elections in 2024". One common opinion we shared was although nothing can truly influence the Canadian elections, the govt. will no longer be able to ignore the existence of Crypto or blockchain industry as a whole. One topic I was super excited for was "Ethereum layer-1 network revenue collapses". Now I might sound like a conspiracy weaver but I personally think there is more to the launch of the Dencun upgrade, and it is all part of a bigger plan of action. But on the contrary, the sudden decline in fees could also be because of how flexible, feasibly & dependable L2 solutions are. If all of this wasn't fun, we also talked about "Qatar brings in crypto rules framework in a sign of Web3 development in the Middle East" and being someone who spent 18 years in KSA, it was fantastic to see the approach the arabian peninsula is taking. Through a proof of concept called “Project Revo,” Toronto Stock Exchange owner TMX Group is testing a blockchain-based system for tracking the ownership of shares in private companies and the settlement of trades. Yes, it's not all Bitcoin, but Bitcoin is all that people hear about; the others are drowning in their clamor for attention. In the end, like Marie mentioned, only the ones that 10x benefits to the users will survive and prosper. Bitcoin was meant to replace fiat money, but it has never become money. It is still a great investment, but nobody really uses it for buying stuff in any meaningful velocity. It's not because transaction fee in the Bitcoin blockchain is pricey; this has been fixed by Lightning Net. It's simply because people can't use something that changes in value every minute as medium of exchange. Satoshi couldn't wait for Libertarian monetary economists to participate in the design of Bitcoin. Had he waited long enough, Bitcoin could have been competing with USD right now. At any rate, alt-coins inevitably came along, and luckily for the world, Tether's USDT arrived on the scene to replace BTC as medium of exchange for coin traders. Today, stablecoins are paired with most coins in both centralized and decentralized exchanges, proving beyond a doubt that the market's choice for what is used as money has to have stability of value.

"Crypto is here to stay" "The ginie is not going back to the bottle" you name it! phrases i keep hearing about crypto from conversations around legislative bodies. this is definitely a good sign 🤞 Nowadays it is not weather or not crypto is legitimate or not, but it is about how exactly goverments are goong to walk towards embracing the crypro industry by giving it more attention and changing regulations around it. for us, precisely, as a web3 startup talking to Canadian business incubators, it sometimes has been challenging to introduce our startup, as we werent sure the other party had a good view on crypro as a permanent industry. sometimes, in websites we apply, in the dropdown for "choose your industry" doesn't involve crypro as a seperate industry, so often we can check SaSS or Fintech. We'd like to see more acceptance around crypto specifically in the Canadian start up community.
