A lot has changed in the last 15 years. It's no longer enough for brands to invest in their website alone—they need to meet their customers where they are to succeed. As an agency, Barrel has evolved from focusing solely on a client’s website to examining the entire customer journey, seeking opportunities to enhance how customers shop and experience the brand across touchpoints. Many of our clients are CPG brands, making this approach even more relevant. These days we're working on building Shopify B2B E-Commerce storefronts, designing Amazon content, creating personalized email/SMS flows, and implementing Shopify POS. Shopify has continually evolved with merchants' changing needs and customers' buying patterns. They’re not afraid to embrace partnerships like Amazon Buy with Prime while investing the same energy in POS and B2B that got their core e-commerce offering to where it is today. The Summer ’24 Edition is aptly titled ‘Unified’ and, as usual, it’s a lot to digest. The addition of a “Top 10” summary this year is a great starting point. Among my favorite updates are unified & tailored Markets experiences across B2B and retail, store credit availability, split shipping in checkout, and seamless store pickup between POS and DTC. A couple weeks I complained the most in-person events sucked. Meeting new people was difficult, if not impossible. So, it's time to walk the walk. On July 18 in Toronto, Nicole Klug and I are hosting an event focused on connections and opportunities. One of the things I love most about my job is exploring trends that are shaping Canada and the world and developing products that help our clients remain competitive. Our #AI workshop product is a great example of that. We've now road-tested it with several teams and it's been getting rave reviews. Kudos to Anna VanDuzer & Michael Mahoney who really put their minds and hearts into this product. Our workshop provides the tools you need to make good decisions around how to (or not to) integrate AI into your work streams. Surface talk is boring! Engaging in deep, meaningful conversations is where true growth happens, both personally and as an entrepreneur. This past week, I had the opportunity to experience this twice. The first was an insightful conversation over beer with Nicolas Hébert and Dany Lefebvre. We discussed the challenges cannabis brands face in Ontario, especially for those coming from Quebec looking to expand. Learning from Dany’s marketing and business strategies left no doubt in my mind that he will be a major player in this market. The second opportunity came over dinner with Keith Bao and Manpreet Cheema. We explored business opportunities, investing, world events, family, values, and the importance of choosing the right people to surround ourselves with. Keith asked me a profound question: “Where do you get your strength and courage from?” It took me a moment to reflect. When it was time to answer, I showed him the bangle I wear around my wrist. He remarked that he sees many Indian people wear it, and I explained that it’s not just a piece of jewelry or an ornament. It’s called the Karra, holding profound religious and spiritual significance in the Sikh religion. It’s a powerful emblem of faith, unity, and moral integrity. Sikhs wear it as a symbol of personal strength, unity, and ethical conduct. It serves as a reminder that we are all connected and equal. We wear it so people may know that we as Sikhs, always ready to fight for righteous causes and protect the weak. It signifies our dedication to upholding the values of courage, sacrifice, devotion to God, and service to humanity. This conversation ended up being one of the most meaningful ones I have had this year. Knowing who you are and what you believe in is crucial. This self-awareness will help you in all areas of life.

I just had yet another meeting with a client who told me she was quoted over $11K for her small-business website...🤧 An important PSA for all my fellow #businessowners 📣 : There are very few cases in which any small to mid-size business owner should be paying this much to have a website developed. Gone are the days... There is a plethora of platforms that exist now, such as Wix, Squarespace, etc. that have pre-coded website templates that you can hire a designer to create for you. You don't need a coder, and in most cases, your website should only cost between $1-4K to develop. The Idea Suite has been awarded one of Canada's Top Growing Companies of 2024! It's the third time we've made the list, and it feels like a wonderful way to celebrate our 10th year. Woah. I've been flagging this for about half of a year but to see Vancouver asking rents year-over-year drop 8% and Toronto rents 3%... In fact, they've both now dropped to a 22 month low. This trend is accelerating. All signs point to this continuing. Things are starting to get interesting. With the cost of living crunch and increased workplace flexibility around remote work, demand is dropping substantially to live in cities this expensive. Very important though: Rents are still up in the country 7% year over year. It's very important we don't take our foot off the gas pedal in the building housing, but perhaps the shift needs to begin in building in secondary markets faster as consumer demands are shifting quickly. https://lnkd.in/gSdtEW97
