DevEx, where does it start? Recently I went to an event: “Developer Day | Toronto” by Atlassian. I enjoyed it, although there were many interesting topics, one really caught my attention, “The State of Developer Experience”. At the end of this talk I reached a conclusion: Developer Experience (DevEx) should start during the interview process (IMHO). Maybe this a know subject, but before I didn’t connect as part of DevEx, being honest, I didn’t even connect it to the Onboarding process 🙈 Is not like I wasn’t consider DevEx before, in fact in Loopio we are constantly iterating over these 2 proces (Interview and Onboarding), but adding the perspective that DevEx starts as early as the interview process it for sure will bring new ideas, and I must confess that I’m exciting about it (which is the reason I’m writing this “Post”). During the Atlassian talk, they quoted some results from their 2024 report “State of developer”, which I found interesting: * DevExp is important or very important for 63% of developers when deciding whether to stay in their current job. * 69% of developers lose 8 hrs or more per week due to different inefficiencies. * 86% of leaders believe that attracting and retaining the best talent will be nearly impossible without improving developer experience The relation between DevEx and attracting/retaining the best talent was really insightful. It helped me to understand something I was wondering: “Why do people keep getting back to interviews with Loopio”. I’m not saying Loopio isn’t great, but if you haven’t worked before in Loopio, if you don’t know anyone in the company, and considering that Loopio is not known like other giant’s tech companies, what is making some candidates that applied before and were not selected, to come back and apply again. Then, I remembered the feedback from some recurring candidates has been: “The interview process is one of the best I have had so far”, which honestly was my same thought when I did my interview years ago. It may sound obvious, but for me this just bringing more light to the importance of improving the DevEx as early as the interview process. Before to close this post, I want to add a thankful note to Atlassian, it was a nice event, very well organized and with great topics 🙂, THANK YOU.

Cloud complexity means you need a lot of specific experience to build modern backend systems when you're using cloud providers like AWS or GCP. This can often be a problem, preventing efficient team collaboration and leading to clunky backend/frontend team divisions. For startups, having all engineers be able to work on any part of the stack is a huge performance boost. One of the big benefits of Encore's approach, providing a standardized TypeScript SDK for declarative infrastructure, is that it reduces the amount of specific experience required to build cloud-native production ready applications in TypeScript. With Encore, more teams can start working and collaborating across the full stack, even when using scalable cloud services from AWS and GCP. I had an interesting discussion with folks from the Chrome and Firefox teams about React Server Components and how they affect the web performance at the Toronto Web Perf Meetup yesterday. The DCL event seems to happen when the last bit of HTML reaches the browser, which can be seconds later. Until that happens, no module or deferred scripts are going to be invoked. Having the browser paint the page before all suspended components load is definitely a good feature, but it doesn't change the fact that we need to deliver all data as fast as possible. All the deferred or module scripts won't load until DCL happens. Have this in mind when you're suspending your components. It's easy to think "it will reach the browser whenever it does" since the users will be able to interact with the website before that, but don't adopt that mindset.
