As we wrap up Small Business Month, I am still buzzing from the conversation we hosted with Patrice Mousseau for our employees! This talk brought together two very important areas of focus for Coast: 🔸The first is our journey towards Reconciliation. Last month, we formalized Coast’s Reconciliation Goals with support from Rise Consulting to guide us in making meaningful progress toward reconciliation. And we know that listening to and building relationships with Indigenous people needs to be our focus in this stage of our journey. 🔸The second was about supporting small businesses, which has always been a focus for Coast. Banks have a responsibility to bring positive change to Canadian society. That’s what I’m so pleased that Concentra Trust, part of the Equitable family, has launched a national Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) awareness campaign to educate Canadians about an underused tool that can be enormously empowering for those with disabilities. The need for this campaign is clear as RDSPs are far less understood than its TFSA or RRSP cousins. Nearly 40% of Canadians living with a potentially eligible medical condition don’t believe they make enough money to contribute. The reality is that beneficiaries actually don’t need to contribute a cent in order to get benefits from this program....that's right it is very different than simply the tax sheltering provided with TFSAs and RRSPs and it is unambiguous that everyone that qualifies will benefit by opening an RDSP. Add compound interest into the mix and you have a truly transformative construct. Many thanks to Lillian Bayne and Michael Hayes, who were instrumental in helping me and so many other Canadians understand how an RDSP represents opportunity, empowerment and stability for those who often need it most.    I’m especially proud of the role credit unions are playing in this effort, and we’re pleased to bridge Canada’s RDSP knowledge gap with them. Excess capital is likely their driver, and the fact they have exited several other foreign investments in recent years. This is a problem for all the big banks - a captive/closed market at home results in excess capital that must be put to productive uses. And I gather…..the good opportunities for same in the US are few and far between at this time, and, it’s no easy market to operate in (just ask TD), so perhaps this is seen as a low risk foray, to attempt to acclimatize themselves to that very unique marketplace.

Excellent highlight about the need for action focused on the public health crisis concerning children's mental health and these two organizations. Early identification/intervention, eliminating the stigma of treatment, making treatment more accessible, and reducing social isolation are critical. Do the hard things. 💪 It's a mantra I have followed my entire life. Change doesn't happen sitting in the status quo and "managing". That applies to personal change as well as change that really impacts the world around us. Today, that change is needed more than ever in our world as we continue to face societal challenges. My "doing the hard things" career-wise started with the degree I chose, engineering. The hardest possible degree to get (don't "@" me...). It forms the basis for doing pretty much anything you want in your career as I have found, as the core skills learned are problem solving and a deep, deep resilience and comfort with ambiguity. The next real pivot point of "doing the hard things" was making a complete shift from my marketing agency career into non-profit just over a decade ago. Besides the actual entry being hard, it was a total retooling and refocusing of my skillset and where I wanted to focus my efforts. Follow that up with spinning up consulting and moving into the startup and fintech world full time 4 years ago. Today, I am working through the latest "doing the hard things" as I build my teaching portfolio, including most recently, adding teaching at Schulich, the #1 business school in Canada. It's easy to stay in our comfort zones. No real change happens personally, professionally or in the world around us unless we are willing to do the hard things. Thank you Amy Altwerger for inviting me to Rosie's roadshow. You have developed an amazing platform to help Canadians as they age in so many areas from healthcare to mental health to finding purpose, the list goes on. I know Zael Miransky, CFP, President, CEO and I are glad to be on this mission with you. As we have an ever increasing amount of people transition to retirement. These are some common questions that we come across with pre-retirees: What do I want to do in retirement? (Travel? Family? Hobbies?) Do I help my kids financially now or later? Who is going to take care of me as I age? We believe that the most important thing for us to understand when working with people is their relationship and attitudes towards money. Financial security is not only having enough money but realizing how you can spend that money. A lot of this is outlined in a financial plan. If you are working with an advisor and don't have a financial plan, ask for one or find a new advisor. If you don't have an advisor or planner and are wondering what a financial plan looks like, we'd be happy to show you. Age is just a number! #financialplan #retirement #moneyattitudes
