Newcomers 🌏 and Graduates 🎓 are some of the most sought after consumers in Canada 🇨🇦 While we are well known for having the largest Graduate and GenZ audience in Canada many do not realize our reach with respect to new Canadians. New Canadians are more often than not in the process of opening their first bank account and credit card, selecting a mobile phone and internet provider, and signing their first automotive lease while they explore this country and everything it has to offer. 73% of Newcomers started using Snapchat in their home country and 42% of them are motivated to use Snapchat to stay connected with their friends, family and colleagues. In fact, when deciding on a first service provider in Canada (e.g. bank, cell phone, internet, home/renters insurance, car insurance, 79% of Newcomers seek recommendation from family and friends. The findings also confirm that Snapchat drives action among Newcomers, with 44% likely to take any action after seeing Snapchat content through chat with friends/family. ‘Canada’s population is experiencing its fastest growth in six decades and 98% of it is through immigration’- new IPG report. Out-of-Home is arguably the media channel best positioned to connect brands with this rising surge of people. Being ‘one to many’ when there are many more people in our cities and communities helps brands boost their visibility quickly and with scale. The robust data that the OOH industry has steadily built up further helps brands by providing insights on creative messaging, context and environment, while also speaking to outcomes and attribution. IPG’s report paints yet another positive picture for OOH growth: ‘This is why we are likely to see growth in OOH touchpoints in communities where it may have made less sense to invest before. A lot has changed in the last 15 years. It's no longer enough for brands to invest in their website alone—they need to meet their customers where they are to succeed. As an agency, Barrel has evolved from focusing solely on a client’s website to examining the entire customer journey, seeking opportunities to enhance how customers shop and experience the brand across touchpoints. Many of our clients are CPG brands, making this approach even more relevant. These days we're working on building Shopify B2B E-Commerce storefronts, designing Amazon content, creating personalized email/SMS flows, and implementing Shopify POS. Shopify has continually evolved with merchants' changing needs and customers' buying patterns. They’re not afraid to embrace partnerships like Amazon Buy with Prime while investing the same energy in POS and B2B that got their core e-commerce offering to where it is today. The Summer ’24 Edition is aptly titled ‘Unified’ and, as usual, it’s a lot to digest. The addition of a “Top 10” summary this year is a great starting point. Paid social CPMs spike to $20+ in the weeks leading up to Black Friday, but many brands choose not to test lower CPM channels. Why are they so comfortable with leaving money on the table? Last week, I had the chance to chat with a paid media agency based in Canada. They shared that in their market, it was possible to get CPMs in the $2-$5 range for linear (traditional) TV ads during Black Friday. For brands looking to get a lot of top of funnel awareness (read, a lot of views!), the numbers tell you that it would probably make sense to at least test these channels with CPMs being ~10-25% the cost of paid social ads on Meta. But many marketers are hesitant to test those channels like TV because it's notoriously hard to measure their impact - making it a risky bet for their career and hard to justify to their boss. It's still not a fully solved problem, but post purchase surveys (coupled with a coupon) are a great way to start understanding the impact of these "hard to measure channels" and build confidence. Brands are already using surveys to understand the impact of their influencer marketing strategies - measuring the effectiveness of TV can be as simple as adding in "Saw you on TV" as a response to "How did you hear about us?" We've already seen examples of our customers using Zigpoll to do this. Manucurist used our surveys to identify that a lot of site visitors heard about their brand through a mention on Good Morning America. Jolly Mama used survey responses to build confidence in their decision to invest in PR, tracking that around 5% of their paying customers first heard about their products in articles on sites like Vogue. These are both 7 figure+ revenue brands making significant investments into "hard to measure" channels because they know it drives ROI. My understanding is that both also treated their initial testing of these channels as experiments that they allocated a smaller portion of their budget to. Once they saw early indicators that it was working via their surveys, they built the confidence to invest more from there. Hard to measure doesn't always mean no ROI! And getting the directional data you need to make decisions doesn't have to be complicated either.
