Looking forward to another “Volunteer Community Weekend” session mentoring Canada’s future, our youth. Thanks to Coalition of Muslim Women of KW, Fauzia Mazhar, and Alaa Allouh for providing us with the support systems that encourage all of us to give back to our society. In this session I will use my “Grassroots Approach Lens” to address long term well-being of our Canadian youth. While reports such as Deloitte's highlight the 14.5% youth unemployment rate in Canada and the projected $18.5 billion GDP loss by 2034​ (Deloitte Report commissioned by the King’s Trust Canada, CTV News, 2024), these statistics are often discussed in isolation, without focusing on real, practical solutions. Today’s youth are not only disconnected from economic opportunities and social well-being, but they also stand at odds with a world of conflict and instability. The youth of today do not want wars or division. They crave peace, opportunity, and collaboration to build a better, more inclusive future. I will also be highlighting an often-overlooked issue of the vast amount of scholarship money left unclaimed each year due to lack of awareness. In Canada alone, $100 million in scholarships go unutilized and $2 billion in student grants go unclaimed. This is because students do not know how to access these resources or wrongly assume they are only for top academic performers or those in financial need​ (SOFI, 2023; Global News, 2018). I am partnering with students in our communities navigating these opportunities together. I also emphasize co-op programs, which bridge the gap between academic learning and the workforce, giving students the hands-on experience and professional connections that are essential for success in today’s job market. Nations across the world from Denmark, China to UAE and India are already redefining the direction of their youth using models such as “Sovereign AI” to create and build AI solutions tailored to local needs, cultures, politics, and languages. That is why we are focusing and challenging status quo via actionable solutions at the individual level addressing scholarship gaps, co-op opportunities, and career misalignments, mentoring and empowering Canadian youth to take control of their futures. I want policy makers to take note: It is your responsibility to provide quality education, decent work opportunities, healthcare, and a platform for youth voices to be heard in decision-making. It was great to gather last night at Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 celebration where I was a guest of fellow Innovation Governance Program cohort member and Fast 50 leader Anders McKenzie. Wonderful to reconnect and/or meet in-person with the Council of Canadian Innovators | Conseil canadien des innovateurs team members Skaidra Puodžiūnas, Gabriella B., and Patrice Oliveira. There was a fireside chat with Anders and PointClickCare's Founder and Executive Chair Mike Wessinger who shared his insights on bootstrapping a new startup, raising financing, focusing on the right markets. Key insights for me were: - don't capital-constrain your business by getting financing too late, and balance with retaining control - don't just chase financing, find the right people to have around the capital table, which means ones who are additive, are the right fit for you, and provide access to the right network - the two most important pieces of advice he gives to aspiring entrepreneurs - (a) focus on one thing, not the many many things, and (b) find true product-market fit for that thing. He also, without prompting, gave an impassioned plea to governments to be more supportive and enabling for Canada's tech, innovation and entrepreneurship sector. Yes, this was driven, at least in part, by the recent changes to the inclusion rate on the capital gains tax (cited as hostile to business) but what came through to me was his love of the country and desire to enable us to create the conditions that will allow us to grow companies here, with all the benefits that come from that. So back in 2017, quite literally on a dare, a team of 6 people decided to run FWD50 in Ottawa. I did NOT have "be a free library of hundreds of public sector innovation talks" on my Bingo card. But here we are. Since 2020, we've also been recording, captioning, and publishing our talks. In 2023, our best-attended workshop happened online—with over 850 participants. If you're wondering how AI might impact your job in the public sector, you should watch it. Just got down to reading ‘Zero to One’ by Peter Thiel. One line that struck me deeply is: ‘Today’s best practices lead to dead ends; the best paths are new and untried.’ The international education industry in Canada is facing unprecedented challenges. Our national brand has suffered, policy landscapes are shifting unpredictably, student demand has plummeted, and we’re entangled in significant diplomatic and security issues with our largest source country. We cannot hope to recover by clinging to the methodologies of the past. It’s time for fresh ideas, innovative ways of engaging our audience, and a new narrative for our institutions. There’s immense value to unlock here. We may not regain the volumes of the past, but there’s a real opportunity to attract students who are genuinely committed to studying in Canada and prepared for the experience. In these complicated times I believe it’s time to ‘insource your student recruitment’—to take control of your narrative and directly connect with prospective students. Building a Case for Growth: Using Data to Secure Investment in Advancement For nonprofit advancement teams looking to scale their fundraising operations, making a data-driven case for investment is key. Peter Fardy, a fundraising consultant, shares how he helped triple fundraising at Dalhousie University over 12 years by tracking performance, benchmarking against peers, and forecasting achievable growth. First, analyze your historical data to understand your fundraising potential. Look at new commitments secured and funds spent over at least 10-20 years. Despite yearly variability, Fardy found a clear correlation between increased investment and higher returns at Dalhousie. Over time, they averaged $6 in new commitments for every $1 spent in advancement. Next, compare your performance to peer institutions. While imperfect, benchmarking helps determine if you’re above or below average in key metrics like new commitments per staff, expenditures, and return on investment. At Dalhousie, benchmarking confirmed they were competitive but underinvested in fundraising compared to peers. Then, build a realistic forecast for future performance to make the case for increased investment. Without additional resources, why expect to outperform your historical average or peer institutions? But with data showing the potential for growth, argue for ramping up investment to scale impact. For Dalhousie, a forecast model showed potential to triple new commitments within 5-10 years with more staff and dollars. Finally, determine funding sources, whether from the operating budget, endowment assessments, or elsewhere. At Dalhousie, the university provided additional funding once they saw the strong case for growth. Within a few years of increased advancement investment, the university endowment exceeded what it would otherwise have been due to new commitments. By analyzing your fundraising performance, benchmarking against peers, and crafting an achievable vision for the future, you can build a persuasive case for advancing your advancement operations. Like any investment, the return won’t be immediate, but with the right data and resources, nonprofit fundraising teams can drive sustainable long-term growth.

These changes are a great reflection on the years of advocacy by women, Indigenous and Black entrepreneurs. 🎉 ➡ There is a new Inclusive Entrepreneurship Team appointed, and they are at work already ➡ They created a new $50M program that provides loans and training for businesses majority-owned by women, Indigenous and Black entrepreneurs with revenues under $3 million ➡ BDC Capital, BDC's investment arm, is creating two new $100M platforms to support Indigenous and Black-led businesses

Should Smartphones Be Banned in Classrooms? As Ontario introduces a ban on cellphone use in classrooms this September, it begs the question: Are we addressing the symptom rather than the cause? What if students are resorting to their phones not out of distraction, but because traditional educational methods are failing to engage them? The reality is, in our technology-saturated world, the answer isn't simply to exclude smartphones from the learning environment. As discussed in a thought-provoking article from Carleton University, (in the comments) smartphones embody a paradox in education. They can distract, yes, but they also offer unprecedented opportunities for enhancing education through interactive apps, instant access to information, and tailored learning experiences. The challenge lies in transforming potential distractions into powerful educational tools. It's time to rethink how we can integrate technology like VR, AR, and AI into our classrooms to make learning more interactive, engaging, and suited to the needs of today's digital natives.
