Dan Fong, our Head of Research and Energy Analyst, was on BNN Bloomberg with Andrew Bell to discuss his recent upgrade to BUY for Suncor Energy Inc. "Prior to our upgrade, what we were looking at was a company that had already made a lot of financial and operational gains. We thought they were ahead of schedule on their turnaround, and we thought the stock was reflecting full and fair value," Dan said. "Fast forward to Q3 earnings, they blew expectations right out of the water. Almost on every single measure, they excelled, and we're becoming increasingly confident there is more room to run here." Dan discussed how the company has focused on the fundamentals, which are safety, reliability, and costs, and how this has flowed through to more capacity, production, and higher profits. Safety has tangible benefits for shareholders, beyond the obvious benefits to workers. "When you have higher safety, you maintain those assets at a higher level. You run them higher. Billions for CCUS Pathways Alliance CCS Project Poised for Multibillion-Dollar Investment Backing Canada Growth Fund (CGF) has proposed funding support for the carbon capture and storage (CCS) project led by the Pathways Alliance, a consortium of the largest oil sands producers, including Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL), Cenovus Energy, and Suncor. This project, estimated to cost C$16.5 billion, aims to capture emissions from Alberta’s oil sands and is critical to meeting Canada’s climate targets. The Canada Growth Fund (CGF) is set to finance a significant portion, although final agreements are reportedly still under negotiation, with investment decisions expected by mid-2025. Finance Canada announced the Canada Growth Fund’s fourth investment will support Varme Energy Inc., an Edmonton-based developer of waste-to-energy facilities with integrated carbon capture and storage. Parent firm Varme Energy AS is headquartered in Oslo, Norway. In partnership with Calgary-based Gibson Energy Inc., Varme is seeking to develop Canada’s first waste-to-energy project with carbon capture and storage in the Heartland industrial region northeast of Edmonton. The Canada Growth Fund would purchase up to 200,000 tonnes per year of carbon credits for 15 years at an initial price of $85 per tonne plus “escalation,” Finance Canada said. [Editor’s note: Even without escalation, that price amounts to $17 million per year, or a total of $255 million over 15 years]. Carbon credit offtake agreements – a form of carbon contracts for difference – de-risk emissions-reducing investments by guaranteeing the purchase of carbon credits for abated emissions at a fixed price. In January, the City of Edmonton awarded Varme a 15-year contract to collect and process 200,000 tonnes per year of municipal solid waste beginning in 2027. The new project will integrate carbon capture technology to safely and cleanly incinerate waste and produce affordable clean electricity, while creating jobs, lowering home energy costs, diverting waste from landfills and reducing emissions. Waste-to-energy with carbon capture has significant potential to be scaled-up for use in cities across Canada. All Genesee units are now 100% fueled by natural gas! The province has transitioned from 80% coal power to zero, achieving this milestone years ahead of schedule. This week, Capital Power successfully transitioned the Genesee 2 facility from coal to #naturalgas, marking the end of coal plants in Alberta. The repowered Genesee 1 & 2 units will deliver 512 MW of net capacity, totalling 1,332 MW, utilizing best-in-class natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) technology. On Nov. 12-13, 2024, the Energi Simulation team visited the University of Calgary to review Professor Apostolos Kantzas’ research chair program in #energytransition. Representatives from Cenovus Energy, Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL), Cascade Institute, Remedy Energy Services Inc., KALiNA Distributed Power Limited, Algar Geothermal, Alberta Innovates, PRTC and the University of Regina also participated. Good progress has been made, through the Energi Simulation Centre of Geothermal Systems Research that is led by Professor Kantzas, in geothermal simulation, energy harvesting, as well as thermal and elastic property determination. Research on the fundamentals of unconventional resources also continues to support the industry in maximizing the energy efficiency of heavy oil and bitumen recoveries.
