Canadian Grocer's annual Produce Ops survey results are out, and there's one quote that caught my attention: "The most challenging part our department faces is the condition we receive our supply in," said a survey participant. Quality and consistency of supply are key concerns, along with rising produce costs. More than half of respondents reported that shrink is about the same as last year, with 20% noting an increase. These findings are consistent with the conversations we have every day with grocery operators at Growcer: It's becoming increasingly hard to carry a quality product consistently, be it due to supply chain disruptions or the frequency & severity of weather events in regions that currently grow North America's products. The AGLC is reminding the Canadian cannabis industry that cannabis product samples may only be provided by provincially-registered cannabis representatives within retail stores. The provincial cannabis regulator (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis) sent out a memo on October 18 to all cannabis licensees, representatives, and suppliers, reminding them of the province’s rules around cannabis sampling.  While the AGLC allowed cannabis sampling in 2023, cannabis suppliers must be registered with the AGLC as “cannabis representatives,” and samples can only be provided by those representatives directly to retail cannabis store licensees in retail cannabis stores. These product samples, reminds the AGLC, are for licensee use only and may not be provided directly to a licensee’s staff or the general public. The memo also notes that “AGLC inspectors attended recent cannabis industry events and observed Cannabis Representatives and Cannabis Suppliers providing cannabis product samples to event attendees.” From the memo: “Cannabis product samples may only be provided by Cannabis Representatives directly to Retail Cannabis Store Licensees in retail cannabis stores. Cannabis product samples are for licensee use only and may not be provided to a licensee’s staff or the general public. They must meet all Health Canada requirements including packaging, labeling and federal compliance reporting. Records of all cannabis product sampling activities must be retained for 6 years. Cannabis Suppliers are not permitted to represent or promote cannabis products in Alberta including engaging in cannabis product sampling activities unless they are a registered Cannabis Representative with AGLC. Cannabis Representatives and Cannabis Suppliers may not sell or give away cannabis products in Alberta.”

🚀 Canadian CPG Startups: The Struggles and the Hope 🇨🇦 Starting a brand in the Canadian CPG space is no small feat. Many of us are finding that manufacturers here require high MOQs (Minimum Order Quantities), which can be incredibly discouraging for emerging entrepreneurs. It's a tough reality that can sometimes feel like a roadblock to innovation and creativity. 😔 But here's the silver lining—there are manufacturers and co-packers out there who believe in supporting small, emerging brands. The challenge? They can be hard to find, and often it feels like a treasure hunt. 🕵️‍♂️ What’s surprising, though, is the contrast with our neighbors to the south. The U.S. seems to have an abundance of options that cater specifically to new brands, offering very low MOQs and making it easier to take that first big step. 🌎 One key lesson we’ve learned on this journey is that self-manufacturing can be a viable path. It offers control and flexibility, but it’s not without risks—testing, scaling, and the sheer workload can be daunting. 💪 So, here we are, navigating these challenges and pushing forward. Is Tilray, one of the first Canadian cannabis companies to go public, becoming more of a beer company? That's the question I ask in today's Cultivated Media Let’s take a look at the company’s latest results: This past quarter, Tilray’s beverage/alcohol business accounted for 33% of the company’s revenue. That’s up from 18% the same quarter the year prior. And, the company’s cannabis business accounted for 31% of revenue this past quarter — down from 35% the year prior. So, the trajectory is clear. Tilray wants to be a house of craft beer and liquor brands as much as it wants to be a house of cannabis brands. It's sort of like the LVMH model, but for intoxicating substances.
