𝐌𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲! It was such an honor to attend the Google Toronto LEAD program graduation, and to celebrate 37 incredible future women leaders who completed a 6-month journey of growth and self-discovery. These amazing women were offered invaluable resources – mentors, coaches, sponsors – who helped them build their village of advocates. And they also gained tools, from leadership skills to interview practices, to build their confidence and own their strengths. I love how everyone walked away with a clearer definition of their leadership philosophy – 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫? We often talk about wanting to see more women in leadership, and wanting more women to lean in. It’s powerful to see organizations actually investing in the development of high potential women, and providing them with the resources to accelerate their growth. I’m incredibly grateful to have been a part of this remarkable support system (thanks Kim Rellinger!), and I’m so proud of all the women who stepped outside of their comfort zone to develop their leadership style. My blue hair is one of the tools I have that helps me scare away bad-fit clients and at the same time, attract clients that I might like working with while being authentic to myself. If you have experience with this, what advice do you have for someone just getting started to help them avoid bad clients and find the right ones? This was the topic of our live show today and it's one that fascinates me a LOT. Some people do things like added hoops for someone to jump through... high price tags, application processes, forms with 10 to 20 questions before they can buy, etc. Other people are trying so hard to make money that they do the opposite and remove all the barriers they can... free discovery calls, no applications, low prices, etc. Usually the barriers to entry only go up after people have suffered the impact of "hurricane bad client" on their business. When you have a bad client, the exchange isn't equal. Both you and your client are investing in a relationship with each other. You invest physically with money and time and resources, emotionally with your feelings about the transactions and results, and mentally with the effort you spend to learn and document and strategize. A good client relationship balances the scales physically, emotionally, or mentally. You both invest time, money, mental energy, and emotional energy into the relationship and you're both happy with the investment. A bad client relationship drains one or both of you. Even if you met the criteria and delivered the products they bought, you're not happy about the exchange. One bad client can take your physical, mental, and emotional resources and use them up. This means you have less to go around for growing your business, helping other clients, or spending time with friends and family when you're not working. One bad client can set your journey to success back weeks, months, and in some cases, even years. I had that happen to me once... I let a bad client that paid well stay with our company for YEARS. When I finally said "enough" and moved on, you could FEEL the tension cloud leave our office and everyone on the team had a renewed buzz of excitement. So what about you?
