As a frontend developer actively applying for jobs in Canada, I've noticed several worrying trends emerging in job descriptions and hiring practices that deserve more attention: 1. 𝗝𝗮𝘃𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 → It's surprising to see Java replacing JavaScript in many frontend job descriptions. → This confusion suggests that those drafting the job postings often lack input from the development teams. Java and JavaScript are distinct languages, and this mix-up can create unrealistic expectations from candidates. 2. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 → In 2024, instead of fewer cover letters, we're seeing an increase in mandatory ones. Even when labeled "optional," it often feels like a subtle filter, causing anxiety for job seekers who feel pressured to submit one. 3. 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 '𝗼𝗿' 𝗮𝗻𝗱 '𝗮𝗻𝗱' 𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 → There's a big difference between "Knowledge of Angular, React, or Vue" and "Knowledge of Angular, React, and Vue," yet many companies treat these requirements interchangeably when discussing compensation. → Pay ranges should reflect these distinctions. 4. 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸" 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 The debate continues: does the "Open to Work" badge make candidates seem desperate, or is it simply a tool to connect job seekers with recruiters? Opinions are still split. 5. 𝗡𝗼 𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 → Some companies write long, detailed job descriptions but provide minimal information about the benefits they offer. → Casual dress codes and team activities may be nice for some, but they're not a substitute for substantial benefits. 6. 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗱-𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆-𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 → More companies are labeling their job posts as 'Entry-Level' to gain better visibility, but they require 4+ years of experience. → This tactic wastes time for job seekers, and platforms like LinkedIn seem to ignore the issue. 7. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗧 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 → Many job descriptions for frontend developers now expect expertise in backend technologies like Node.js or Python, databases like SQL or MongoDB, and even cloud services like AWS. → This growing expectation stretches the definition of a frontend developer beyond reason. 🚀 Express.js 5 is Finally Here! 🚀 After years of development, the long-awaited release of Express.js 5 has arrived. coming after a 10-year wait since the initial pull request was opened in July 2014. Even people were start saying GTA-6 will come earlier 1️⃣ Promise-based APIs One of the biggest updates is native support for promises, making it easier to work with modern JavaScript async/await syntax. This eliminates the need for callback functions and simplifies error handling in asynchronous code. 2️⃣ Router Enhancements Express.js 5 introduces more flexibility at the router level, including the ability to apply middleware to specific routes more easily. This makes it simpler to manage complex applications with modular route handling. 3️⃣ Improved Error Handling Error handling has been greatly improved, with native support for async error catching. If you're into Firebase and love a good coding challenge, this one's for you. 🔥 The Task: 🔐 Build a user authentication flow using Firebase email and password. But here's the twist: User Authentication: • Manually add one user's credentials directly into Firebase Authentication. • Create a login form that matches the entered credentials with the manually entered user. • On successful login, display a success toast (React-Toastify or Hot-Toast) and navigate to the home page. Home Page Features: • Logout button that logs out the user, shows a logout toast, and redirects back to the login page. • User List showing users created by the authenticated user (the one manually entered). • Create User Form where the authenticated user can add new users (email & password). Editing & Deleting Users: • Add Edit and Delete buttons next to each user in the list. • Clicking Edit opens a new page where the user can update the selected user's email and password. • Delete removes the user from the Firestore database and updates the list on the home page. All data should be stored in Firestore, and remember, only the manually entered user can create, edit, or delete users! Next time you find yourself at the crossroads of React and the wider web, remember these tools as your allies. They'll navigate you through the maze of browser APIs with finesse, keeping your components efficient and your codebase pristine. useRef declares a ref. You can hold any value in it, but most often it’s used to hold a DOM node. useImperativeHandle lets you customize the ref exposed by your component. When I first started my coding career, I constantly doubted myself. I'd look at elegant code written by others and think, "I'll never be that good”. ** That's imposter syndrome. ** And guess what? Everyone feels it at some point. Or that feeling like someone’s going to ‘find out’ you don’t deserve the progress you’ve made. But over time, I realized something important: Imposter syndrome is a liar.  ↳ Your hard work got you here.  ↳ Your dedication keeps you moving forward.  ↳ Your growth is real, even if it doesn't feel that way. Typescript is pretty easy to pick up if your first language is something like C# or Java. For folks used to dynamically typed languages, it can feel like a straight jacket. For other folks it's a godsend to know what kind of data you're dealing with and to have some form of contract. Me personally, I'm 50/50 on it. With Javascript, I want to go fast. That's why I'm using it. And besides, how am I supposed to psychically know it's FormEvent<HTMLFormElement> over anything else? What do other folks think? Does it help with your development flow?

PSA junior devs You need to know the basics: HTML, CSS, JavaScript I’ve interviewed 10+ times (relatively small sample size, I know) Built projects using: React, Next, Redux, Vue, Nuxt, Astro, Hugo, GSAP, Tailwind, Bootstrap … And no one has ever asked me anything significant about those tools (aside from the preference between React or Vue, and Tailwind still being controversial for adoption for some reason…) I imagine all of these tools are useful to include on my resume, and they are good talking points But when it comes down to the technical portion of interviews, it’s always been back to basics (at least for my personal experience and probably the front end heavy early career roles I’m looking at. YMMV) Study up if you’re lucky enough to have landed an interview To anyone reading this, feel free to reach out with any questions about interview prep / my experiences / general support Breaking into tech is hard, so let me know how I can help

It takes all your project's files and assets and bundles them into… Well, bundles! (collective units) It keeps your code organized and efficient, especially as your project grows. Why you can’t do web dev without it? Let’s Imagine a single script file with 400 lines of JS. No problem. But then we start adding more functionality to the page, before you know it, your single script file contains 20,000+ lines of code. That’s not readable and it’s very hard to maintain. So, a huge problem. That’s why you need Webpack. Webpack lets you split this code into smaller & easier modules. And that makes it easy to: - collaborate & work together - organize all your code better - maintain all your code & keep it updated - give you fast loading times with code splitting. It works like this: 1. Entry Point. ➥ You tell Webpack which file to start from. 2. Dependency Graph. ➥ Webpack maps out all the dependencies between your files. 3. Bundling. ➥ Webpack bundles your files and dependencies together.
