Canada is not only moving slowly, it's baking in obsolescence to ensure laggardly movement in future! How? The law does not codify "write access" --- the actual point of open banking systems - the ability of consumers to make frictionless transactions. Why? The banks only support, I quote "consumer-driven DATA exchanges". What does this mean? It means that once Canada is ready to allow transactional instructions: 1. The law will need amending (no uncertainty/political risk there - right?) 2. Regulations will need updating 3. Systems/frameworks for transacting will need to be built The current law will be reviewed in 3 years. Given this engineered obsolescence, I can say with certainty - Canadians may have real open banking by 2030. 🎉

Canada’s lag in productivity is a puzzle for many people AND Entrepreneurs. Average annual productivity growth dropped to 0% from 2019 to 2023. For SMEs productivity dropped to 58% that of large firms. The GOOD NEWS: Businesses can take actions to curb this trend. 154,022% revenue growth! Sounds like a founder’s dream, but Neo Financial made it a reality. The Calgary-based fully digital fintech company revolutionizing banking and payment infrastructure in Canada just took the first spot in this year's Deloitte Technology Fast 50 category, which recognizes Canada's 50 fastest-growing technology companies with the highest percentage revenue growth over a consecutive four-year period. The winners in other categories were just as impressive: 1️⃣ Enterprise – Industry Leaders Category: Hopper, a Montreal-based travel platform, took the #1 spot with 1,207% growth. Hopper powers its mobile app and its B2B partners’ direct channels. 2️⃣ Clean Technology Category: Oxygen8 topped the category with 6,610% growth. Vancouver-based Oxygen8 develops high-efficiency air systems that enhance indoor air quality in commercial and residential buildings. 3️⃣ Companies-to-Watch Category: Topping the charts with a growth percentage of 8,829% is Inmotive Inc., a Toronto-based company that is the inventor of the Ingear, an ultra-efficient multi-speed powertrain technology for a wide range of applications. Also interesting, 67% of this year’s applicants believe that Gen AI is comparable to the internet – a generational innovation – with 44% of applicants already deploying Gen AI, 30% experimenting with Gen AI, and 17% with active pilots. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I’m not a fan of crypto. And apparently, I’m not alone. According to a 2023 survey conducted by the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), the proportion of Canadians who own crypto dropped 23% compared to a similar survey in 2022. And more Canadians who own crypto regret investing in it. The OSC’s Crypto Assets 2023 report finds that Canadians are less interested in crypto investing compared to the 2022 survey. And they’re less likely to believe it plays a key role in the economy now or will play a role in the future. Canadians are reporting that their crypto asset investments are not doing as well as a year ago. Fewer owners hold crypto asset portfolios worth more than they originally invested. And not surprisingly, more crypto asset owners are expressing regret over purchasing crypto compared to a year ago (77% versus 68%). Here are some additional findings: How knowledgeable are investors about crypto?   Overall, Canadians know more about crypto than a year ago, and positive opinions of crypto have declined. Compared to 2022, slightly more Canadians can identify a basic definition of crypto assets (2023: 54%, 2022: 51%). Many Canadians have low confidence that if they bought crypto now, they would be able to sell it in the future. Only 16% of people in 2023 were highly confident in crypto assets and 15% in crypto investment funds. Why did Canadians purchase crypto?   The reasons provided for purchasing and not purchasing crypto were similar in both surveys. The most common reason given for buying crypto was as a speculative investment or gamble (28% in both years). However, fewer crypto owners report buying crypto as a long-term investment in 2023 compared to 2022. (2023: 20%, 2022: 29%). Among those who have never owned crypto assets or crypto funds, the top reasons for not buying are: 💹 Concerns about potential risk. 💹 Lack of knowledge about crypto. New BDC study : 4 key trends shaping the future of Canada’s businesses The past five years have been marked by several crises and hardships that have led to many changes for entrepreneurs. Most companies have taken concrete steps to adapt. For example, 52% invested in new websites, 40% developed new online payment methods and 35% incorporated more efficient working methods.
