There are more International Students in 2024 than 2023?! It's surprising, but Canada has issued slightly more international student permits in 2024 than in 2023 so far. However, this is expected to change when the August data is released as new federal policies take effect. To recap, the government aims to reduce the non-permanent resident (NPR) population from 6.5% (as of January 1, 2024) to 5% over the next three years. As a quick reminder, NPR stands for "non-permanent residents," which includes people like international students and temporary workers who live in the country but aren't permanent residents or citizens. This goal requires a 22% reduction in the NPR population over three years. One of the steps the government plans to take is reducing the number of study permits issued by 35% over the next two years. This policy is expected to slow down Canada’s population growth rate from the current 3.2% to about 0.74% annually between 2024 and 2027. As a result, the rental market could cool down since it's heavily influenced by NPRs, who are often renters. While rent prices might not decrease, the growth in rent is expected to slow significantly.
