Annually, the world produces over 353 million tonnes of plastic waste, yet only about 9% of it is recycled. The critical role of informal recycling workers, who manage 85% of all recycling efforts under often poor conditions, is frequently overlooked. The Global Plastics Treaty aims to address this by emphasizing a just transition that includes these essential workers, ensuring sustainable and inclusive recycling practices. As treaty discussions progress, there is a focus on incorporating provisions that protect and improve the livelihoods of informal recyclers, promoting a fair transition within the plastic economy. Further, countries are exploring ways to integrate just transition principles and the roles of these workers into the treaty, highlighting the need for their protection and inclusion. Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is a strategy for sustainable community driven development. Beyond the mobilization of a particular community, ABCD is concerned with how to link micro-assets to the macro-environment. The appeal of ABCD lies in its premise that communities can drive the development process themselves by identifying and mobilizing existing, but often unrecognized assets, and thereby responding to and creating local economic opportunity. ABCD builds on the assets that are already found in the community and mobilizes individuals, associations, and institutions to come together to build on their assets—not concentrate on their needs. An extensive period of time is spent in identifying the assets of individuals, associations, and then institutions before they are mobilized to work together to build on the identified assets of all involved. Then the identified assets from an individual are matched with people or groups who have an interest or need in that asset. The key is to begin to use what is already in the community. ABCD's community-driven approach is in keeping with the principles and practice of participatory approaches development, where active participation and empowerment (and the prevention of disempowerment) are the basis of practice. It is a strategy directed towards sustainable, economic development that is community-driven.

Sustainable and meaningful development outcomes are often difficult to achieve, but they have a much higher chance of succeeding in environments where there's collective awareness and ownership of development challenges and impactful cooperation in crafting the solutions to tackle those challenges. #Cooperatives have proven over their history to be resilient and effective vehicles of building prosperity and creating socio-economic opportunity. I am very honoured that my first job in #Canada contributed to advancing Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada's mission of mobilizing the expertise of the Canadian #coop sector to develop and grow coops around the world. Canada has a long and successful cooperative history and is globally recognized as a leader in the cooperative sector. The origins of many communities across Canada are deeply intertwined with the evolution of coops, which have, over decades, generously provided funding, technical expertise and catalyzed their influence to support economic improvements in developing countries. 🔎Now Available: 2023 National State of Professional Workforce Knowledge and Skills to Action Climate Change Adaptation Survey Report. To help reduce the impact of #climatechange and build resilience across the country, the report calls for 70% of the members of #professional associations to apply climate change adaptation tools by 2027. 🌐 65% of planners believe that the profession can have a significant #impact on adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change. 🌐 Only 37% of planners report feeling well, or very well, equipped with the required competencies to apply adaptation tools in their practice. Climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity today, and municipalities across British Columbia are on the front lines of this crisis. From devastating wildfires to deadly heat waves, the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly severe and frequent. Greenwashing by the oil and gas industry is fueling the crisis. CAPE BC and 36 partner organizations have penned a letter to mayors, city councillors, and members of the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) calling for decisive action to eliminate fossil fuel sponsorship in municipal politics and address the issue of greenwashing.
