This article provides a helpful summary of the changes to Section 504 and the ADA and when these new updates will come into effect. The biggest change is that these laws are adopting the WCAG 2.1 AA standard. Sometimes we forget to celebrate the wins. The original update to the ADA that introduced WCAG standards had an exception for password-protected instructional materials. People and organizations from all over wrote to encourage the government to remove this exception. The government listened and the final rule will require public higher education institutions to make their instructional materials accessible. Hopefully, this will apply to all higher education institutions in the future. #Accessibility https://lnkd.in/dxBm_icm

When we intentionally select vocabulary to appear educated and knowledgeable, we risk the possibility of an audience not comprehending our message. Instead, choose words that explain the message clearly, and make it easy for people to understand. The two sentences above are examples of how language can be exclusive or inclusive. The benefit of using plain language is that more people understand the message. Check out the draft for Plain Language from Accessibility Standards Canada and share your thoughts.
