#history #personal This week, I happened to have several talks with Canadian friends 🇨🇦 and Samsung colleagues 🇰🇷 about Research in Motion, a.k.a. RIM, or better known as BlackBerry 📱. Starting in the Waterloo-Kitchener region of Ontario, Canada, RIM was a dream company for many Canadian university students, especially those at the University of Waterloo. I was also one of them; I applied many times but never got a job there in the early 2000s.📚 Ironically, when I first joined Samsung in 2013, the team was very busy developing a sales and marketing strategy to capture the enterprise mobility market share and replace the outdated BlackBerry devices with #SamsungGalaxy devices. I worked with leading Fortune 500 customers, especially those in the financial services industry, to help them transition their corporate-liable phones. I was also fortunate to witness the #SamsungKnox team building a strategic partnership with BlackBerry as a software company when they pivoted from being a device manufacturer to a device management software solutions company.🤝 Over the past decade, the entire enterprise mobility industry has experienced a massive shift in major players, welcomed newcomers to the game, and bid farewell to some older players. I feel fortunate to be in this exciting industry, and it still gives me goosebumps 😱 when I look back on how incredibly fast it was moving. Cheers 🍻 to everyone who is still in this industry. Canada is working to ensure international streaming companies contribute to maintaining local and indigenous content with a 5% tax on their in-country revenue. While it might seem similar to the push from Telecom operators on the Internet Tax in Europe, in reality, it is very different. In the EU case, base infrastructure which is very costly to finance is strongly regulated and thus struggles to capture a substantial share of wallets, thus the Internet Tax could help fund digital infrastructure. In Canada's case, I do not see the rationale why private players need to subsidize local content if that is not what the free market is demanding.

Canada-based Netskrt has raised about $7.2 million ($10 million CAD) in its series A round. Netskrt focuses on delivering video to remote and rural communities and for specific video applications with hard-to-reach subscribers across rail operators and airlines. The company has been deploying caches into transportation environments and says it also sees a need to create a CDN footprint to help smaller ISPs manage live event traffic. ISPs serving remote, rural, exurban, or underserved urban areas are often too far away from the video source or CDN nodes for their customers to realize the benefits of the CDN, which is where Netskrt comes in. Big fan of their software and use it all the time in Chrome to make “how to videos” etc. Haven’t really got too deep into the paid features, but I can see how it’s a very useful tool to engage customers and demonstrate capabilities. #bigfan #business #video #knowledge
