Last week, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) shared two important announcements. ClearBlue Markets published Live Updates for subscribers of our Vantage carbon intelligence platform, that included detailed reviews and analysis. In summary: 🍁 ECCC published information about approved carbon intensities (CI) under the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR). The information for each CI pathway includes the CI applicant, feedstock type, facility location, fuel type, and the version of the Fuel LCA model used for the assessment. ECCC also published information on approved CI scores under the Canada CFR. In total, 119 final CIs have been approved. 🍁 ECCC also announced the proposed Oil and Gas Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cap Regulations (proposed Regulations). While 20% of the world’s freshwater in lakes is in Canada, only 6.5% of the world’s renewable water supply flows through the country, the majority flowing into the Arctic. This makes Canada’s role in sustaining global freshwater resources both significant and fragile. As the Canada Water Agency takes shape, here’s what I believe the top success metrics should be in the coming years: 3 in 3: In the next 3 years, 1️⃣ Reduce water contamination in high-risk areas 2️⃣ Establish strong Indigenous partnerships with co-governance frameworks 3️⃣ Implement a national water monitoring system for real-time, interoperable, and accessible data 5 in 5: In 5 years, success should mean: 1️⃣ Measurable improvements in water quality across key regions based on updated safety parameters 2️⃣ A fully realized integrated national water management strategy that emphasizes the economic realities of this sector 3️⃣ Enhanced climate resilience in rural and urban water systems that includes flood and drought protections 4️⃣ Expanded Indigenous water rights and governance that meet high standards of inclusion and reconciliation 5️⃣ Greater water-use efficiency and conservation across sectors founded on public engagement and water literacy initiatives If we prioritize these, Canada’s water future will be safe, sustainable, and inclusive! #WaterManagement #CanadaWater #IndigenousPartnerships #Sustainability #WaterQuality #ClimateResilience

A new program has opened up for Canadian utilities under the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program’s (SREPs’). Utility Support Stream (USS) supports utilities and system operators in modernizing their systems and integrating renewables while maintaining reliability and affordability. Electronic Monitoring Program Expands to Clarenville Area   The provincial government has expanded the #electronicmonitoring program to the Clarenville region. The region spans from Bellevue to Port Blandford along the Trans-Canada Highway and all of the Bonavista Peninsula.   The program allows for enhanced supervision for offenders on probation and conditional sentence orders where the court has imposed the electronic monitoring condition. It also enhances the supervision of those on a temporary absence from correctional facilities where electronic monitoring is deemed appropriate.   Offenders in the program wear ankle bracelets that provide 24/7 location data to probation officers to help enforce conditions such as curfews and no-contact orders.
