Forescout Technologies Inc. Research - Vedere Labs recently launched a 7 years study on OT systems that are accessible online. When speaking of the risk posed by OT systems, a common assertion I've encountered throughout my career (spanning over a decade) is that OT systems are "air-gapped. Well.. our findings indicate this is not always the case. Globally, the number of exposed OT systems has decreased by only 10% with significant regional differences. Things go better in US and Canada (47% and 45% decrease respectively) than in Europe (where we saw increases of 82% in Spain, 58% in Italy, and 26% in France). Many of these exposed devices are located within critical infrastructures and can be easily targeted by cyber criminals, hacktivists groups (remember Aliquippa?) and nation-state actors. It's crucial that we identify these exposed devices and safeguard them through segmentation and continuous monitoring.
