There’s one group on social media that you don’t want to neglect if you want to land more business. (And it’s not your target audience.) 👉 It’s your peers and potential competitors. Last week I landed the opportunity to speak at an upcoming event here in Vancouver. And the only reason I landed the gig was courtesy of the lovely Sarah Huguet who recommended me to the organizer as she was unable to attend. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Sarah in person (yet!) - but I’ve followed her work for years and interact with her regularly online. Sarah is technically a competitor  - another social media pro who’s been running her business much longer than mine. I could have decided over the years not to connect with Sarah since she isn’t my target customer, and Sarah herself isn’t likely going to buy from me. But I’ve always liked her work, and I love seeing what she is up to online. I’ve taken the time to comment on her posts regularly and we’ve exchanged a few DMs. Fast forward to last week, when it came time to recommend someone to speak at the event, my name was top of mind. Connecting with other peers and businesses in your space can lead to so many different kinds of opportunities - if you are willing to put in the time to build a relationship. Therapy might be an oversaturated market… but that’s not always the problem. It could be: your copywriting isn’t hitting home for your target audience. Doesn't get them angry enough at their situation to invest in support. Doesn't make them desire change more than their fear of getting started. I worked with a client who had 3 million subscribers + followers But his content wasn't converting. And even though he had a solid business. I used to think the best social media managers were always “on.” Replying instantly. Posting daily. Tracking every trend. But then I realized the best social media managers are the ones who know when to step back. Here’s what I stopped doing in 2024: • Posting for the sake of posting • Working with people who don’t respect deadlines • Treating my own mental health like an afterthought And here’s what I started doing: ✔ Prioritizing long-term strategy over short-term trends ✔ Saying “no” to people who don’t align with my values ✔ Protecting my time like it’s my most valuable asset (because it is) Burnout doesn’t make you better. Boundaries do.

💡 Advice I'd give first-year Marketers and Social Media managers: - You don't have to know everything about every platform. - You don't need to jump on every trend. - Mistakes will happen. It's okay! - Don't forget to look at other brands for inspiration too. - "I don't know, but I'll look into it" is often the best answer. - Set clear boundaries. - Get a therapist. 👾

5 Things I Stand by as a Social Media Manager: 👋🏻 Giving Value > Going Viral: You can’t expect engagement without offering something in exchange. Before hitting post next time, ask yourself, What’s the one key takeaway? Is it something they can immediately apply?  Will this information make their life a little easier? ✨ Focusing on relationships over numbers: I can talk about this all day, every day. Little conversation in comments, tips in DM’s, or other people’s comment sections are the little hacks to building a strong community. 💌 80/20 rule: 80% give and 20% ask: The secret to building real connections today is simple: Give, give, give—then ask. 📲 Plan, experiment, and analyze > following trends: Riding on trends is good but planning, strategizing, and analyzing every move to make the trend relevant to your people Is Better and more profitable! 🌎 Focus on growing a small engaged audience than big numbers. We’ve learned from the horrors of the past - 100,000 followers are cool, but not having even 1,000 true fans is honestly disappointing. Involve your people, make them feel seen, and create a sense of belonging! Remember: you give, you get!

Before you hire a Social Media Manager for your business, consider this: 'Best Practices in Customer Support' I've had experience as a Social Media Manager for major organizations. Aside from product knowledge, these guys often look out for Social Media Representatives with deep understanding and experience in customer service and this has been my biggest selling point. Most times, I am the first point of contact for people showing interest in my clients' product/ services, from the internet; I provide information, answer questions, direct them to sales team and attend to complaints from users, on social media. On product information, we get lots of inbox messages mostly questions that I have already provided answers for many times in the comment section, on website FAQs, or in featured posts on LinkedIn. But for as long as these pages keep growing and the business keeps having more visitors, we keep getting such questions and I have continued to attend to each person's uniqueness and peculiarities, and I do so patiently, politely and carefully, ensuring customers leave satisfied. That's the attitude of a great Support person, you should look out for it. They never get tired of providing information for customers, and this in some cases lead to great sales. One thing I hold high is clarity and attention to details. And the highlight is that some customers drop me some really sweet comments. I recall chatting with one and he commended the brand for 'swift and speedy' response. In his words, he didn't expect that she(my client now represented by me) would be that nice. I smiled. I had sold him a very friendly brand personality during our interaction and it stuck with him. Every business owner needs an intentional chatter like me. 😅 What am I saying? Customer Support persons are the face of your Organization, and communication plays a huge role. Social media handlers or Support agents who lack it will most likely give your business a negative impression and will drive you into losses. A certain hair vendor on Meta fired her social media handler. The Handler had communicated rudely to a customer who was requesting for delivery information regarding an item she purchased (which was due by the way) and instead of taking responsibility and perhaps explaining to the customer why the delivery was taking so long, the handler responded thus, " Is it because of 15k hair that you're disturbing us?" Imagine that! For a product a customer has paid for. If you were that customer? How would you feel? Would you consider coming again? Would you recommend? You see? Whether customers have a pleasant experience or not will depend on the' activities of your support team and this can impact greatly on brand image. It's important you know who you hire for such customer-facing roles whether it's a Social Manager or CSR So what do you look out for before hiring one?
