Halifax municipal election: Fully public services improve quality—time to deprivatize. Like most Conservative lead provinces, there has been a huge focus on the privatization of healthcare. "The current approach to municipal services in the Halifax Regional Municipality relies heavily on the private sphere. Contracting out, subcontracting and outsourcing are all forms of privatizing services that do not align with the fundamental principles of the most effective, efficient, equitable, responsive, sustainable, and inclusive provision of services." This approach just does not work for Canada. I found this article excellent at explaining the problems of privatization. Undermining Local Democracy Using the phrase ‘undermining local democracy‘ might seem like hyperbole but Bill 20, which was unveiled by the provincial government last week, clearly is designed to take power away from Albertans and centralize it within the provincial government. My latest blog covers this assault on local democracy that clearly goes against the provincial government’s own survey of Albertans. #Edmonton #Alberta #yeg #yegcc #yyccc

This is a perfect example as to why consumers need a strong Competition Bureau Canada. It’s incredible that a national provider of essential communication services believes that it is appropriate to exclude certain components of their “fixed price” in the “fine print” of a contract. As stated in the CBC article, the “Rogers rep explained that equipment such as TV boxes are considered a monthly rental — separate from the base TV service — and the fine print in customers' contracts says rental fees can change.” I believe that this sort of abuse of consumer trust simply drives customers away …in this case from Rogers. But I’m more focused on the argument that the rep makes… that the rental cost of the same equipment in a home can change because it’s allowed in the fine print… even if the equipment remains unchanged. Thank goodness for our recently strengthened Competition Act, and the Bureau’s dedicated team. Market dominance clearly creates attitudes of invincibility that require pushback. #ContestableMarkets are fair and transparent, and don’t rely on fine print.

Some members of Council have been spreading misinformation about the savings proposed in this year’s budget, so let's clear the air. ➡️ What we didn’t do: We never proposed cutting funding for mental health or the low-income transit pass. Instead, we called on the Province to step up and help fund these critical services while ensuring The City continues to support them. ✅ Reductions we did propose: • Executive Leadership: $2.5M • Corporate Management travel, hosting, meals 50% reduction: Minimum $1.39M (travel alone) • Tax shift reduction (0.5%): $12M in relief for homeowners • Transit-oriented development studies: $24.5M • Secondary suite incentives: $10M • Tax rebate: $24M in relief for homeowners • Cowboys Park capital upgrade: $4.1M That is about $54-$78 million, depending on tax shift decisions, and doesn't even include the massive debt cancellation for our proposal to cancel electric buses. Could we have pushed deeper into the organization to find more savings? Absolutely. But the majority of Council rejected even these practical, common-sense reductions, making it clear that more ambitious proposals wouldn’t have gained support this year. It wasn’t worth bringing forward more efficiencies when even these straightforward ideas were dismissed. Transparency matters. Accountability matters. Calgarians deserve a City government that prioritizes relief and responsible spending—and I’ll keep fighting to make that happen. #yyccc #yyc #calgary
