MWC Las Vegas needs a reboot. Seemingly, half the exhibitors from 2019 have disappeared. More concerning, there’s only one major U.S. operator on the floor and no Canadian or CALA operators. None of the traditional RAN hardware and software suppliers are exhibiting; a major Open RAN supplier is MIA. Oh, and no major tower, neutral host or fiber providers have floor presence. And the annual speculation of whether 5G, Open RAN, BEAD, DISH, CBRS Private Networks, and AI Networks are either ready for prime time or poised to put a dent in the universe seems like Groundhog Day. These factors, plus hefty registration and travel costs, have influenced many folks I talk to not to attend this year; including myself. Having served on advisory boards for several industry events, I understand the plight of conferences is impacted by internal and external factors. Most resist change because change is difficult. The last time this event changed in a major way was 2017 when GSMA relaunched what was CTIA Super Mobility Week. Notably, it was moved from Las Vegas to San Francisco and intentionally sought to engage ecosystem participants beyond the U.S. What’s beyond the event organizers’ control is that 5G, Open RAN and CBRS Private Networks have largely been underwhelming, to-date (or at least fallen far short of expectations). Perhaps 5G SA will reinvigorate the event. Or perhaps as AI matures, it will imbue the event with momentum in the way the introduction of smartphones did. Then again, maybe the current version of MWC Las Vegas is the “new normal.” Nevertheless, I’ve got some thoughts on rebooting this event which I’ll share separately. (Wouldn’t that be an incredible opportunity and responsibility to chart its course for the rest of the decade!) I’ve enjoyed a long history with MWC Las Vegas and its predecessor and hope to have more experiences at in the future. Now this is interesting development re: convergence of mobile and cable tech. ….“The idea is to overlay 5G on the coax.” That approach would also enable cable operators to take advantage of legacy HFC assets such as power and backhaul. The general idea would be to run 5G as an overlay on HFC in spectrum above 1.2GHz – on up to 4GHz or 5GHz. DOCSIS would continue operate at 1.2GHz and below. As a possible alternative to a distributed access architecture (DAA) that would pair a remote PHY device with a virtual cable modem termination system (vCMTS), the NRoC approach could match a traditional, integrated CMTS with a 5G radio deployed where a DAA node would typically be located.”

(a/k/a "Neo") knowing that every advanced and emerging Smart technology including 4G and 5G small cells were headed for the public and utility rights of way and 23,000 municipalities, investor owned, publicly owned, coop and rural electric utilities were about to become the largest vertical wireless infrastructure owner in America, they just didn't know it yet. Our Open Access Infrastructure program was developed after having spent two decades deploying wireless equipment and antennas on tens of thousands of poles in over 1,300 cities which was unimaginably difficult, costly and time consuming. Regardless if the tenant is a Smart City service provider, commercial wireless service provider or public sector agency, they all needed commercially reasonable rates and non-discriminatory access to poles and power, expedited permits and fiber (backhaul or fronthaul) and a way to track and manage millions of distributed assets. Fast forward to today. FCC orders and 26 US States that have adopted their Small Wireless Facilities Acts into State Law and yet there are still warehouses full of 5G small cells and Smart Technologies with no place to put it, no way to power it, not nearly enough accessible fiber to connect it and thousands of Cities and electric utilities that have no idea how to permit it or any software systems or tools track it. In light of the 5th Circuit decision deeming USAC and the Universal Service Fund Unconstitional, the Supreme Courts decisions on Cheveron and Loper-bright likely to drastically limit the authority of all regulating bodies (including the FCC) and lets not forget, this is an election year, even if the FCC were to revisit the matter and render a decision. it would still take years to codify through the courts. An army of lawyers and lobbiest are on the march once again, looking to line their pockets by pushing for even more regulation, Federal and State legislation but regulators and legislators only dictate policy that tells public agencies and utilities what to do without offering any funding, guidance or support that can be used to show them how to do it without any budget, expertise or resource to do it with. Our Open Access solution includes a rational siting policy, adoptable engineering and construction standards, an equipment dimension and volume based rate setting method and the software systems, resources and tools Public Agencies and Utilities need to track, manage and administer pole access, permits, power, fiber and ground space. Advanced technology and wireless service providers realize a fast time to market, predictable project schedules, lower capital cost and decreased operating expenses resulting improved success rates, timeline and budgetary certainty. Our Open Access program doesnt try to regulate or legislate the problem away, it solves it.

I was thrilled to be in attendance at #CTS2024 made possible with the support of the Deaf Wireless Canada Consultative Committee (DWCC), Broadcasting Accessibility Fund Inc. and the generous support of the Canadian Telecommunications Association for registration. Thank you everyone, however two things happened that made me ponder to think: 1) on the schedule was a panel of accessibility experts, and yet for this topic the room was one-thirds at capacity compared to the day before and the morning before. 2) why there was no Deaf with lived experience of telecommunication barriers on the said panel. 80% of telecom accessibility is based on the fact the world is audio-centric, and the industry has worked to ensure accessibility for Deaf, Deaf-Blind and hard of hearing. IP Relay, Video Relay services, and there was no one to explain to these experiences. I sincerely hope the conference organizers will do better for collaborations with Deaf, Deaf-Blind and hard of hearing Canadian telecom customers. It was wonderful to see Stephanie Cadieux again in her role from the Office of the Chief Accessibility Officer/ Bureau de la dirigeante principale de l'accessibilité who did a top notch job of facilitating the panel. Let’s do it again next conference, this time with Deaf persons lived experience added to the panel.👏🏼 Looking forward to seeing more collaboration with Deaf people and telecoms. Edit based on discussion with another Deaf colleague: Perhaps we should join forces to request an Accessibility Standard for Telecommunications as after a review of the ICT standards by Accessibility Standards Canada as many aspects to do with Deaf accessibility were glaringly missing. #AccessibleCanada #telecom #accessibilitylens #Deaflens #CRTC
