This literature review draws lessons from local, national and international initiatives that leverage data to promote equity. The review applied these insights to the City of Toronto Black Community Data Governance Framework we authored with Black Health Alliance and released earlier this week. #Data without context produces outcomes way different from the reality...says the pic It might be a number, a word, or an image, but on its own, it doesn't tell the whole story. Context is crucial for data for several reasons: - **Misleading conclusions:** Data in isolation can lead to misleading conclusions, fostering faulty assumptions and incorrect deductions. This is especially risky in critical fields such as medicine or finance, where decisions based on data carry substantial implications. - **Misinterpretation:** Without context, data can be easily misinterpreted. For example, seeing a stat that ice cream sales rise during shark attacks might suggest a strange correlation. However, with context, like hot weather driving both ice cream sales and beach visits, the connection becomes clear. - **Incomplete #picture:** Data alone offers only a fragment of the situation. Consider a weight scale showing 150 lbs. Is that a healthy weight? The answer depends on factors like height, body type, and muscle mass. Context provides the missing details for a comprehensive understanding. - **Wrong decisions:** Relying solely on raw data for significant decisions can have disastrous outcomes. While companies may track customer purchases, lacking insights into why customers buy (e.g., good price, brand loyalty) can result in misguided marketing strategies or product development choices. In essence, data is potent, but its true #value emerges when accompanied by context. It's akin to the distinction between knowing someone's name and understanding their entire story. A Labour Day piece that applies a «generations » lens to the federal public service… #publicservice #publicadministration. Other data in the recent annual Clerk’s report that may turn out to be more relevant to Labour Day points to a large population of recent hires that will be the most vulnerable to layoff algorithms. 13.5 percent of the FPS are term employees. Another five percent are students and casuals. 28.5 percent of the FPS have less than four years cumulative experience and the unions are pressing to have seniority be a bigger factor in layoffs. (Young public servants better hope that some form of early retirement packages to open up spots for them become part of the conversation)
