As we wrap up Small Business Month, I am still buzzing from the conversation we hosted with Patrice Mousseau for our employees! This talk brought together two very important areas of focus for Coast: 🔸The first is our journey towards Reconciliation. Last month, we formalized Coast’s Reconciliation Goals with support from Rise Consulting to guide us in making meaningful progress toward reconciliation. And we know that listening to and building relationships with Indigenous people needs to be our focus in this stage of our journey. 🔸The second was about supporting small businesses, which has always been a focus for Coast. Patrice shared the powerful story behind Satya Organic - an Indigenous-owned business and Certified B Corp. Well, that’s a wrap!🌟 The final session in our Five-Part Future Skills series of workshops, hosted by our amazing partner BMO, happened yesterday. And, like all of the others that were tailored exclusively for our Onyx Scholars - Future Skills Development, Workplace Etiquette, Communications & Audience and Working in Teams, this last session on Managing Conflict in the Workplace was just as enlightening and engaging, providing our scholars with critical communication and collaboration skills to enhance their lives. Thank you Emily for sharing your time and knowledge on these crucial topics! Here’s a few more of the gems that were dropped in yesterday’’s jam-packed session: Conflict in all relationships - personal and professional - is universal, and is an opportunity for learning and growth. Each person has a role in critically evaluating ideas to avoid 'group think', a negative outcome of conflict avoidance. Collaborative strategies tend to be employed by people who are highly assertive and highly co-operative vs avoidance strategies employed by people who tend to be low in both assertiveness and cooperation Teams that navigate conflict effectively are more comfortable with a diversity of opinion and tend to be more cohesive than those that don't. The best communicators formulate the most effective strategies for navigating conflict. Emily also walked scholars through some common conflict management strategies that could be explored.
