Architects, my goal is NOT to create a website that YOU will like, Because the goal isn’t that you like it. The goal is that your visitors like it and can navigate it easily. The goal of your website should be that YOUR CUSTOMERS: — understand who you are — understand what you have to offer — understand how your offer solves their problem — can take action easily Truth is, everybody has different personal preferences. And of course you might be emotionally invested in your own website. However, focusing on your own personal preferences won’t result in achieving your desired outcome. Focusing on your goals and target audience does. It’s not like I enjoy to disagree. It’s actually the opposite. But it’s my responsibility to keep your business goals in mind throughout the project. And to remind you when we take actions that are not in line with achieving your goals. I started billing my "do nothing" hour on my projects a while ago—It's been one of the most efficient decisions for my web design clients. 3 years ago, I came to Canada. Finding a job was hard. Then I had 3 part-time jobs—In a bookstore. In a shoe store. Freelancing as a web design All at the same time. Then I covered a position for a website designer going on maternity leave. Three years later—I continue to support them to this day. But when I started, and with three jobs, I was constantly in a rush. Not profitable when you get paid by the hour. Neither for the client, nor for you. I worked fast and burnout faster. Then my contract at the bookstore ended. I quit my job at the shoe store. And I focused solely on web design. All within 3 months. But rushing my work for the sake of being effective was not sustainable. Until I decided to include a "doing nothing" hour as part of my creative process. I must clarify: I charge for this time and, yes, I "do something". But it's an uncommon thing to bill: I sit still in front of the computer. Eyes closed. Or open while I look at my client's website, brand colors, or copy files. And for the longest time, I felt like I was wasting my client's time. Then I saw the results: → Less revisions → Better websites → Happier clients And still, with this extra hour, my work took me the usual time. And I know that because I've time-tracked my work for several years. But I was calmer 🌱 Regulating my nervous system before each project has been my secret. And even, when work is low, it is the one thing that sustains me. One hour that makes a difference. 🌞 Now, it's your turn ⤵ What's something different you do at your business to have better results? This way of working, is what inspired me to launch my web design studio and specialized on creating websites that breathe—those that give the time and space to make calmer decisions, which lead to better results. Call it past conditioning or societal programming, but there are times when I struggle with the thought that I'm running out of time (i.e. I'm getting "too old"). I know it's a bunch of bullshit but the thought still comes up. Anyways, over the weekend I was journaling on this in an attempt to unravel it and truthfully make it stop, when I heard a voice in my head ask me - "What if you were CURIOUS about what you could ACCOMPLISH in the next decade?" Huh? I've never had decade-long goals. But why not put some in place? I mean really the only thing I've got to lose is... the regret of not trying. So I'm leaning into discovering what I can achieve over the next ten years. It's making me feel excited. A bit nervous. But mostly empowered. Dang it's cool how deciding it's time to make a change in your old beliefs and thought patterns can open up new ideas and fresh perspectives. People that have been following me for a while have probably already noticed. I’m talking about effective websites. Like a lot… (🤷 sorry not sorry) But what do I mean by effective? “The degree to which your website is able to achieve your desired goal.” (I put it within quotes so it looks like someone important said it) To put it simply, to make your website effective: 1️⃣ Be very clear about what you are trying to achieve. 2️⃣ Align all of your efforts to reach that goal. I know, it sounds ridiculously simple. But I can tell you, most websites already fail at 1️⃣ . Their main goal is to be "out there" and look pretty. But it’s not going to drive results for you. So in case you want your website to help your business succeed. Be clear on the goal. Align all efforts to achieve this goal. We love “blanding” and blending in (said no one)! To bland or not to bland? What would you do? You know, the san-serification trend in today’s brand redesign. A safe and sure-fire way to conform. Don’t rock the boat or take risks, they whisper in the sea of all the other re-blandings. Let’s make round corners straight. This morning, I viewed a social media post about PayPal’s rebranding and received an email from my PayPal account. The complete transition has not occurred entirely because the email template still uses an old version (with rounded corners). I also wanted to know what the 1-color version of the logo looks like, and the email answered my question. In this article, you see the PayPal rebrand and other examples. I like trends because they are always an opportunity to stand out. The minute something is a trend, it is on the steep slope of obsolescence. How sweet is the feeling when you spot a trend? Architects, your website should have only 1 goal. To make your visitors take action. A website is not a fancy business card. Nor is its purpose to present your portfolio. Your website only has one purpose. ➡️ To guide your visitors to take action. An action that you desire. That could be: — a newsletter sign up — contacting you via e-mail — booking a consultation call Social proof, your portfolio images, the history of your firm…. These are all just measures to reach your goal. So ask yourself, what is YOUR goal. And then optimize all activities to achieve this goal. Ever created designs that haven’t been chosen and thus never realized? Let’s give them some spotlight. The last few weeks, I was working on a new brand concept for Airtool. After having intensely worked on the brand and messaging strategy. It was time for the visual branding. When creating brand concepts I usually provide multiple options. So that my clients have a choice. Therefore, I created a bunch of logo drafts. For three of them I created full brand concepts to present them to my client. After the brand concept presentation with my client, we had a winner. At the same time, we also had two great concepts that have not been chosen. Two, in my opinion, great ideas that will never be realized. Before I ditch those concepts into the bin and let them rot on some directory never to see the light of day again, I wanted to share them with you. Let’s remind ourselves. Just because some ideas and designs are not “the chosen ones”, doesn’t mean that they are bad. In a few weeks I will be able to show the winning brand concept. And how the brand concept translates to my client’s website. PS: What do you think about the “loser” concepts?

I was painfully shy growing up. My mom even had my hearing tested to make sure I could actually hear what was going on around me (I was THAT quiet)! I'd hide behind my big sister and let her do all the talking. It took years of inner work to go from painfully hiding to confidently owning my voice and my story. And my personal journey enables me to help my clients confidently share theirs. I work with a lot of first-time website owners.  When we get to that "big reveal" moment, the excitement often mixes with a wave of panic. "OMG, is this really me?  Do I really want to put myself out there like this?" Suddenly, they feel exposed, vulnerable... ready to hit the "undo" button.  Sound familiar?  If you're nodding along, know that you're not alone.  And more importantly, know that I get it.  I've been there. Which is why when working with clients, there's lots of "grace space" built into the process .... So that you're not only thrilled to launch your website but also comfortable sharing your unique story with the world. Because having a website that truly reflects who you are and what you do is worth it. What would you be doing differently in your branding if you could? A lot of what I teach people when it comes to designing your brand is... Be yourself. Be authentic. Be bold. Be confident. Take a leap of faith. Stop worrying about what others think. You don't owe anyone an explanation to why you created your business the way you did. Just start somewhere.
