From The Fraser Institute: 'In the last two decades, energy has become Canada’s leading export sector, mainly owing to higher oil production volumes, rising hydrocarbon exports, and still-robust global demand for fossil fuels (which provide 80 percent of the world’s primary energy). Measured in millions of barrels of oil equivalent (BOE), Canadian conventional oil and gas production rose from 4.5 million BOE per day in 2015 to 5.4 million/day last year, with most of the additional output destined for the United States. On September 16, 2024, several key developments are happening in the Yukon. Business discussions, such as the Banff Forum and Magnetic North Business Conference, focus on Canada's economic potential, emphasizing critical minerals, infrastructure challenges, and sustainable development. Banyan Gold Corporation reports a 93% gold recovery from its Powerline Deposit at the AurMac Project, with a preliminary economic assessment planned for 2025. In community news, a truck and trailer plunged into the Yukon River after missing the Lewes River Bridge. Emergency services responded, but traffic remains unaffected. Authorities urge drivers to be cautious near the site and follow speed limits. On the economic front, British Columbia is expected to lead Canadian provinces with a projected 3.9% wage growth in 2025, while workers in the Yukon continue to earn significantly more than their provincial counterparts. Additionally, the Yukon Workers' Safety and Compensation Board reported one workplace fatality in 2023 and plans to distribute $10 million in rebates to employers. The board also announced reductions in assessment rates for most businesses in 2025. Spot on analysis from Canadian Climate Institute / Institut climatique du Canada about the barriers to growth of #criticalminerals at this pivotal moment. Access to #capital and financing to bring #nickel #copper #cobalt #lithium and #rareearthelements into Canadian refineries is the number one challenge. Busy last week chatting with folks about Clean Energy Canada's new scorecard evaluating Canadian provinces' work in the #energytransition. Bottom line- Since 2016, 80% of climate spending in Canada has been at the federal level, despite the fact that the federal government is responsible for roughly 20% of all public spending. Pretty much all provinces have work to do to better serve the people and businesses in their provinces in this time of change and emerging economic opportunities- but the leaders and laggards don't always fall along party lines. Canada updates its #criticalminerals list with three new additions, bringing the new total to 34. The list is important to prioritize development and processing of the minerals and materials that are essential to our #energysecurity and #energytransformation. Canada has one of the most robust methodologies to assess these critical minerals - evaluating both supply availability and economic importance on a forward-looking basis. It is a model for the world and should - with the US list - help to refine the assessment for critical minerals in the #UK and #EU. Alignment among our friends, allies and trade partners will be even more essential in the years ahead to attract capital investment and accelerate responsible mining to protect our economies, environment and borders. Thank you Simon Fraser University for the invitation last week to share ideas with students on the clean economy - where we are and where we’re headed. The global race to win investment in #criticalmineral, clean #energy and #cleantech production is ramping up. To land that investment, Canada must do a better job at building people and business’ confidence that playing to win makes their lives and bottom lines better. We must earn Canadians’ and investors’ support. By creating certainty. Consistency. Clear price signals. Avoid pendulum swings. Prove we’re in it for the long haul. To do that, we must communicate better. Many Canadians have real questions and concerns about what the global shift to a clean #economy means to them, their communities and their livelihoods. We must take these reservations seriously and prove to Canadians there is a path forward that keeps them working, paycheques flowing and communities thriving. That means we need to be bolder about communicating the magnitude of this generational opportunity. The opportunity for traditional sectors like #steel, #cement, #construction #mining and #trucking to modernize and optimize operations by using clean energy and clean tech. To keep them competitive. The opportunity for Canada to build new projects…critical minerals, #hydrogen, #nuclear, #wind, #solar, #hydro, #EV and battery #manufacturing, and #energystorage. And create #jobs. It also means getting real about the fact that the shift will have twists and turns. Bumps in the road. Swings in market segments. In supply and demand. That #oilandgas will remain an important part of our energy mix for decades. That Canada is not a monolith. Each region, province, territory has its own unique weather, topography, existing economic base and a energy mix. That means there won’t be a one-size fits all approach. But by having a better discussion with people, policy-makers, community, industry and Indigenous leaders we can figure out where it is Canada is best suited to play. What makes most sense in Atlantic Canada, vs Quebec, vs Ontario, vs AB, vs B.C. So we can plan better. Bring on the right mix of clean energy supply. The right transmission and storage #infrastructure. The talent needed to build it. And that discussion must be backstopped by evolving our climate #policy to zone in on competitiveness. Ask questions and design policy in such a way that reduces emissions but also includes a broader toolkit that protects and grows our economy…gets projects up and running quickly…attracts global #capital. Gives workers the tools to prosper. By doubling down on bridging these two critical public interests, we can lay the ground work to show we’re in this for the long haul!
