The Blockchain Futurist Conference is also an annual gathering of the local movers and shakers in the #web3, #blockchain, and #AI space. NorthstarDAO organized a town hall during the conference to provide feedback to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada | Innovation, Sciences et Développement économique Canada. How do participants feel about the development of AI, its impact on our economy and our society, and how the government should act to position Canada competitively on the global stage? My #takeaway: Web3 may be lost forever to Canada and there is a serious risk for the AI economy to evaporate in the same way if the same mistakes are repeated. What happened with Web3? The leading engineers and entrepreneurs have taken their assets out of Canada. Ethereum has been the most successful venture, 3 times bigger than Blackberry ever was, and bigger than Apple today in terms of market cap. Sadly, I didn't see many of my friends among the OGs come back to futurist this year. If Canadian-born companies are gone, foreign companies are now the biggest voices in the show (US and Japan were very well represented this year). The role for Canadians has moved from inventors to customers, and from exporters to importers of our own technology. With 75% of Canadian AI institute-made patents ending up being captured by US entities, the risk that we see the AI economy leave Canada is real. What should Canada do? If we learned anything from history, the first order of business should be to reduce barriers for entrepreneurs. There are other policy options Canada should consider. - make taxpayer-funded research #opensource (Mark Zuckerberg's strategy for Facebook/Meta), so that Canadians can continue to leverage the 75% of technology that is going abroad today.
