I think there is urgent need for the 21st century QA Engineers to develop the habit of growing by unlearning out-of-date testing methodologies and learning new concepts in practical ways. James Bach is one such legend whose work should be constantly studied. There are best practices that I have learned from his work of which, has a considerable impact on my thinking about testing lately and will be useful for many. You can have 10 years of wrong experience unknownling. Most Fintech companies are siting on a time bomb because they run after QA's with years of experience over QA's with critical thinking ability and best practices. that will be a discussion for another time. James Bach and Michael Bolton in their works highlights how Testers can find Important Bugs Fast which does have an impact on our testing strategy. 1. Work Closely with Developers: The developers are also bread and butter of our work. QA checks the most recent builds and what they change, we advise them on how to be more effective. Then, it provides instant feedback on proper technique enabling the creation of a fast-feedback loop: Although they tackle the bugs we located, new ones keep popping up. In the best possible world, they should have so many problems to work on that they are the limiting resource… not us. 2. Demand Answers (Within Reason) But testing isn’t only a matter of booting tests. Our testing becomes rude without questions. Just keep in mind that questions can sometimes put people on the defensive. It is an art of being able to ask questions that create exciting discussions. Ask questions like why? what? How? since when? 3. Prioritize Testing Based on Change and Impact: A) Test Changes First: New fixes and developments declare new risks; therefore, test these areas first. B) Focus on Core Functions: Test the core functions which define the product before moving down to the peripheral features. C) Assess Capability Before Reliability: Every function needs to work first before evaluating its performance under various scenarios. D) Start with Common Situations: Test with popular scenarios and first data. E) Consider Common Threats: Test for the normal stress and error cases rather than the exotic ones. F) Focus on High-Payoff Issues: Concentrate on those areas where failures could do the most damage. G) Follow the Interests of Stakeholders: Test in areas which are of special interest to others on the team. 4. Become the master of the product The better you know the product, the software and hardware environment in which the product is used, and the user of the product, the better your chances of finding the really important issues.
