It’s Monday and, as a business owner, your workday is likely very much underway. If you’re like me, you’ve probably been up since at least 6:00 am – your brain burgeoning with a list of things that need to get done today and for the rest of the week.   Your email inbox has likely grown 10x since Friday. There are half a dozen missed calls, and God knows how many unread text messages need to be addressed. Everything urgent and rapidly increasing the amount of productivity debt that has accumulated before you’ve even started your day.   If that doesn’t sound like you – congratulations. You’re one of the lucky ones.   If it does, well – I get it.   There’s always lots to do – so where do we start?  Assuming you’re in the second camp, you can generally predict with a moderate amount of certainty that you’ll have a large to-do list at the beginning of each day.  You can also predict, with a moderate amount of certainty, that things will come up each day that will change and add to your to-do list. It’s a never-ending cycle that ambitious professionals must deal with – for better or for worse.  The truth is: that tasks and decisions are never going away. No matter how much delegation, automation, or efficiency you implement into your life – there will always be more.  Some decisions are more important than others.  When it comes to dealing with the never-ending to-do list, some tasks move the needle further than others. This is the concept of leverage. It’s not a new concept and I’m not the first person to talk about it – however, I did a blog post on leverage and How to Do More with Less.  So, when it comes to making decisions, how do we know what the best choice is? The truth is - we don’t. The upside is that time continues moving forward no matter what. The cost of your decision will always be less than the cost of indecision. So, making the choice is better than not making the choice (which is itself a choice, paradoxically).  However, there are certain frameworks you can use to help you out of analysis paralysis and start making progress on the most important tasks and decisions.  Each framework differs but they all have one thing in common – they encourage you to act.  Explore the frameworks below and see what fits your style. They also don’t have to just apply to your professional life. You can use these frameworks in every area of your life.  Sometimes your choice will be right. Sometimes it won’t. I’ve written over 200 press releases for various companies and read hundreds more during my time as a beat journalist and there are a few things I’ve learned about them over the years.  Perhaps the most important thing is that a press release is not an article and therefore does not require a traditional intro to set the scene or hook the reader like you would put on an article.  It’s literally part of a journalist’s job to go through the press releases they receive during the day that pertain to whatever beat they cover.  The “hook” is that the PR pertains to their beat. All they’re after is the information. Once they get the information, they’ll decide whether it’s worth following up with you.  The PRs I hated most when I was doing beat journalism were the ones that tried to set the scene or provide background information upfront.  No scene setting is required. The reporter probably knows your market as well as or better than you if they’re covering it for a living. And you can fill in the background information AFTER you answer the following questions:  - What’s the announcement? - Who’s making the announcement? - Why is this announcement important? - When does this announcement become important? - Where are the areas affected by this announcement? - How does this announcement affect the people in that area?  These questions may vary slightly, but the who, what, when, where, why and how should be answered upfront. (You’ll be saving extremely busy people time and saved time is always appreciated.)
