Develop isn't over for most people. But sadly it is for me. Gabriele Sanfilippo and I attended on Tuesday and Wednesday morning to chat shop with people interested in hearing about life at Spliced Inc. and Anchor Point Studios. Develop never disappoints. And as always>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Familiar Faces ✅ Worthwhile conversations ✅ Effervescent energy at the hotel bar ✅ More beards than the year before, and the year before that ✅ People sporting a different hat every day of the event? ✅ Several meaningful introductions made that we'll keep in touch with? ✅ But more than all this - whilst a lot of studios and publishers will measure ROI by looking at the cost of attending the event and seeing the data off the back of it (as important as this is) - let's not undervalue>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The energy we take from it, and bring back with us 🔋 The connections we make that remind us of the industry we love so much 🤝 The subsequent uplift in focus, happiness and positive attitude it brings to all of us 🌞 What a great reminder of the best industry on the planet! 🌍

The recent layoffs at Inflexion, Humanoid and the Edmonton devs impacted by the closure of Worlds Untold hit close to home. The game dev community is strong, but we need to look out for each other. In that spirit, I’d like to draw your attention to the work being done at the Scaffold Institute. Their new cohort is specifically for devs impacted by the layoffs, and could hopefully provide an opportunity for those impacted. It’s supported by provincial and federal funding so there’s no cost to you.  I've been in one of their Cohorts for most of the year, and I’ve found the experience very worthwhile. The networking with other Alberta devs is invaluable, and the scheduled talks are packed with insights. If you're a game dev looking for your next move in Alberta, I’d recommend you check out Scaffold's program. They'll help you navigate the Canadian game dev landscape, from mentorship and networking to understanding the financial resources available if you choose to start your own studio. Of the recent Alberta studios successful at applying through the CMF for funding, almost all were enrolled at Scaffold. Spectacular opportunity alert... As I look out across a view I'm blessed with this morning, I debate what I'm going to do differently today to land some conversations with graphics programmers. (mids and seniors) I've a few ideas kicking around in my head. My network is extensive, I've hired from postings like this when the right people reach out to me but this one is evading me this week! This opportunity goes beyond just another one of those roles that's being touted across LinkedIn. For starters - remote, onsite or hybrid - you decide. Fully remote role but with the advantage of an AWESOME studio in Altrincham should you want to be on-site. A benefits package that has you front and centre. A well-being allowance, one of the largest pensions I've seen at studio level and access to an electric car scheme aren't the half of it. (it's actually not even a quarter of it). But the real selling point here is the team. Being able to spend time, working side by side with our current Tech Art Team is something I've been debating how to sell and I think simply talking about it is the way to go. José Schneider - you can expect to meet Jose right at the start of the process but be prepared for big smiles, huge energy and deep understanding of the role. Ray Tran - Ray may join the first meeting with Jose. If he doesn't, he'll definitely be next! World-class smart and I can't believe I've just noticed he worked at CCP Games before me. (makes a note to discuss next time we're on a call - Dust 514!!) Rinaldo Tjan - well, we couldn't truly say we're an international studio without having someone in Cali could we. Rinaldo might not join the interviews but you'll be soaking up some of that previous experience and very likely becoming better for it. I mean, I get it. Spend years and millions to build a major franchise installment and end up being an "also ran" behind the most anticipated release in recent memory. It's wicked risky. Almost unbearably so. That being said, if everyone is holding their breath then it feels like the stakes get too high. Rockstar can't deliver anything less than slam dunk. And anyone who's planning to publish in 2025 needs to consider a "GTA" contingency which could be wincingly-expensive-to-completely-not-feasible depending on how hard you'd have to pivot. So who's more under the gun, do we think? Rockstar/T2, or everyone whose studio needs to publish in 2025? What's happening to mid-budget games??? I read an amazing article by Keith Stuart this week as part of his Pushing Buttons newsletter It talked about how KRAFTON Inc. have saved Tango Gameworks and Hi-Fi Rush Keith reminded us what mid-budget games have given us over the years: "FEAR revolutionised the use of AI enemies in first-person shooter games, not Call of Duty; It was PUBG that gave us battle royale, not Fortnite or Apex Legends; and it was Thief: The Dark Project that established many of the rudiments of the modern stealth adventure." The cost of making these games are huge... Which other mid-budget games do we have to thank for revolutionary features/modes?

Narrative games are in an interesting spot. I was in a mentoring group for Toronto indie devs in Hand Eye Society's Futures Forward program, which primarily supports games as a form of creative expression. There were eleven pitches, which were largely based around personal and cultural stories or perspectives. As a queer, visible minority, migrant woman in the game industry, I absolutely LOVE this, of course. I think there's opportunity, though, to help guide narrative projects to increased commercial viability across the industry. Much of what gamers expect out of games - narrative or otherwise - shifts season to season, but I'm still seeing pitched projects suffer from old-world brain. The standard walking sim, QTE one-shot, bare-bones puzzle adventure, and the illusion of choice to deliver strong narratives have been done to exhaustion. I think there will always be room for them, to be fair. However, more and more players are looking for varied first-run experiences, choices that actually matter, replayability, immersion, engaging art styles and music, and - well - gameplay. Why not stand out? Will this apply to every game? No. But too many narrative games pitched today still focus solely on the narrative and not enough on the game. Venba (venbagame.com) is a fantastic example of successfully employing some of these aspects in a clever and impactful package (read: I was destroyed by the end and recommend it to immigrant gamers any chance I get). In Stars and Time (instarsandtime.com) has some pretty clear gameplay and visual inspirations that act as an effective vehicle for its storytelling. Slay the Princess (slaytheprincess.com) just gets it. Then there's the risk factor for investors and publishers. Narrative games generally have much higher word counts to localize, cultural sensitivities or simply appeal to check against on a global scale, less game design-centered devs or development planning, how to market around spoilers, what to offer consumers post-launch, delivery of the final writing and storytelling production based off early concepts and sometimes pre-writer-on-staff, etc. There's not enough space to write out all my thoughts on this subject - and I haven't even touched on HOW to pitch a narrative game, even with modern design elements in mind. So I implore narrative game designers to really dig deep into the landscape - past, present, and future (seriously, pay attention to announcements, please!). What has worked well? What hasn't? What are lessons you can learn from both? Who is your game for and what games do they play and like? I really want to experience your story. I would love to see your game reach and have impact on the many lives who need it. And I'll see you at the next LudoNarraCon (ludonarracon.com). LinkedIn Recommendations.  I have encouraged many people over the past year to make this kind of post, and it seems it is my turn. Having urged others to post something like this, I understand why it needs to be made. Now that it is my turn, I find it difficult. Heartbreakingly, mind-bendingly hard.  I was laid off on January 18th, 2023. The severance package is gone, the emergency fund is gone, and a nest egg I'd been saving for retirement but could dip into in case of emergency is almost gone. Very soon, I will have to choose between losing the house or cashing out my 401 (k) and losing everything I had set aside for retirement.  I need a job. I have experience leading Customer Service teams as large as 1600 or so folks, doing project planning/production work with cross-functional teams as small as ten and as large as several hundred. I have a demonstrated capability to perform above expectations in people management and individual contributor roles. I'd love to stay in Baltimore if you have a remote role available or if you will let me work hybrid, even if it is two months onsite and two weeks back here. I will also relocate if needed. I'd hoped to stay where I am for at least another year and a half to two years so the teenagers could find their way out of the house. If there is no house, that's a more significant issue, so moving is now on the table.   A quick search of my Gmail shows just over 800 "We've received your application" emails during that period. I stopped tracking applications in December of 2023. The mental health impact was too significant to keep monitoring the data, and my system for searching and applying for roles was a solid process by that point. I've had some great interviews over the past year—shoutouts to the team at Raven, Zwift, Blizzard's Overwatch team, and Epic. I've also had some interviews that were not so great.  Wallace T.
