It’s quite concerning when a government organization lacks robust data governance and auditing practices. Imagine employees accessing sensitive personal information without proper records, only to sell it to criminals! 😱 In cases like this, effective data governance is crucial. It ensures transparency, data quality, and accountability. Fortunately, there have been efforts to establish data governance frameworks in various agencies. For instance, the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, and the National Science Foundation have made progress in this area. A new Power Platform success story, this time from Cineplex. A couple of weeks ago I posted about the slow adoption rate for low-code solutions and hypothesized that the problem is that they're (a) too esoteric for most non-technical employees to teach themselves, and (b) not interesting to trained developers who want to use their technical skills and safeguard the status associated with their technical careers. As Cineplex has realized, the way through this impasse is to deliberately train workers on low-code solutions and form a supportive Center of Excellence. 🙌 Enhanced #OpenData - the locations of Ontario's Correctional Institutions - now includes latitude and longitude coordinates, making it easier for people to create interactive maps using this data in popular web mapping programs 🌎. The #data can be downloaded from the Ontario Data Catalogue in CSV, TSV, JSON, or XML formats, or accessed through the catalogue's #CKAN API. While not in time for this year's #30DayMapChallenge this #Mapbox fly-to of Ontario's CECC was created using this open data in the #rstats package {mapgl} in two lines of code inspired by an example from the challenge. This is one of over thirty datasets publicly shared by the Ministry of the Solicitor General as open data. During #GoogleNext, Scott Hirleman and I recorded a few interesting conversations. We were lucky to catch Ujjwal Goel, Senior Director of Data & ML Engineering at Loblaws, at the C2C booth. He shared with us his unique perspective on building a self-service data platform. Today, their data consumers can automatically create and deploy data pipelines to production in 15 min and up to 4 hours for difficult ones. 🤯 Interestingly enough, Ujjwal has very strong product thinking, complemented by strong leadership skills, like ensuring his team is engaged in what they are building. Clearly, this is what his role requires, but the way he balances decisions about what to build in-house, how to build it, when to invest in solutions, and, more importantly, why is really interesting. And all of that while balancing business reality and goals. After watching the video with Ujjwal, I had this message in my head: fail fast. This basically means experimenting and not trying to make it perfect from the start. I think many organizations are missing this when it comes to working with data. P.S.
