The One Metric Most Shopify Brands Are Ignoring (And It’s Costing You Big) Here’s the truth: Most Shopify founders I talk to don’t actually know how much they can afford to pay to acquire a new customer. They’ve scaled their ad spend, hired agencies, and pushed for growth… but when I ask them to break down their Acquisition Marketing Efficiency Ratio (AMER) or their New Customer ROAS (NCROAS)? 👉 Crickets. Why does this matter? Because without these numbers, scaling isn’t strategic—it’s guesswork. Here’s how we’re fixing this for eCommerce brands looking to scale profitably: 1️⃣ Switching from MER to AMER: MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio) looks at your total revenue divided by total ad spend. That’s great, but it includes all revenue—retention, upsells, repeat customers—which doesn’t tell you how efficiently your paid ads are driving new customer revenue. AMER, on the other hand, is laser-focused. It isolates new customer revenue divided by total ad spend, giving you the real picture of how effectively your ads are growing your customer base. 2️⃣ Uncovering Your Break-Even Point: Your AMER helps determine your break-even CAC (Cost to Acquire a Customer). Once we know this number, we can work backward to align ad spend, creative testing, and campaign strategy to hit your profitability goals. 3️⃣ Building Campaigns That Scale Smarter: We pair financial clarity with creative strategy. This means isolating angles, targeting specific personas, and focusing on profit-first scaling—not just vanity metrics like ROAS. 🚨 Here’s the hard truth: If you don’t know your AMER or your CAC threshold, you’re blindly throwing ad dollars at the wall. There's a common misconception among business owners when they receive an email from a "Google Ads specialist" offering to help with their account.  Let's clear the air on who these specialists are and what their motives might be. These specialists are often not directly employed by Google but are third-party vendors with varying levels of experience in Google Ads. They are typically given targets (weekly/monthly/quarterly) to achieve, and their bonuses are tied to getting advertisers like you on a call and executing specific tasks or recommendations. Their emails often come with a sense of urgency (see the image example that annoyed me incredibly today), using scare/urgency tactics to pressure you into a sales call. They might make unrealistic claims about significantly improving your results overnight or remain vague about the services they want to discuss. Here's the reality: Google is a business, not a charity. While they may claim to want to support esteemed advertisers, their primary goal is to generate more revenue for themselves. So, when you receive one of these emails, watch out for the following red flags: Urgency tactics: If the email is causing you stress or using high-pressure language, it's likely a sales tactic. Decline the offer. Unrealistic claims: Significant overnight improvements in the competitive world of online advertising are virtually impossible. Vagueness about services: If the email can't clearly explain what they want to discuss, it's best to ignore it or decline the offer. Going into a call blind can lead to decisions that may not be right for your business or ad account. Remember, Google Ads (or any ad platform) is a tool, and its success depends on a well-planned strategy and ongoing optimization. Empower yourself by researching, consulting reputable marketing resources, and cross-referencing recommendations with best practices. If you're unsure about a suggested change, ask questions and seek clarification. If you're unsatisfied with the answers, politely let them know you'll seek a second opinion.
