Mathieu Germain has joined Korbit as our new VP of GenAI! 🚀🚀🚀 I'm so excited and humbled at the same time. Mathieu is an engineering leader without equal in Canada's ML ecosystem! He has been tackling some of the hardest problems across software engineering, natural language processing and computer vision while transforming research work into real-world applications. Mathieu was a former engineering leader of Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute's R&D arm, which he helped build from scratch and where he led teams of up to 20 ML engineers to design, build and deploy systems for startups and Fortune 500 companies. He was also the former VP of AI at horoma AI deploying computer vision systems (drone and satellite imagery) for solving agriculture and environmental problems for companies across the Americas (US, Canada and South America) 🛰️ I worked with Mathieu many years ago during my PhD on different projects. One of our biggest successes was when together with Amazon we rolled out the Milabot conversational system to 10,000+ households. We later won the NIPS (now NeurIPS) competition award for it. Ah, I remember the good o' times. It was December 1997 sometime between 11 pm and 5 am, at a call center in Scarborough, Ontario. I was one of the fifteen-person team that provided night shift technical support for Sprint Dial-up Internet Services subscribers! Back then the pay was $12 an hour, which to a 17-year-old, was pretty good money. A call came through to me. Caller: "Yes, I can't get connected". Me: "I am happy to help. Have you received the Sprint Internet welcome package with the CD?" Caller: "Yes, I have it in front of me." Me: "You'll need to install the connectivity software to your PC by loading the CD" Caller: "Where do I put the CD" Me: "Locate your disc drive on your computer. It's has a plate with a circular mold in the middle" Caller: "I can't find it." Me: ***Thinking what could go wrong*** "Do you see something like a small rectangular button anywhere on your computer?" Caller: ***After around 20 seconds*** "I think so..." Me: "OK, press that" ***Hearing the sound of the CD drive ejecting*** Caller: "O MY GOD, IT OPENED!!" Me: "That. Is your CD drive, sir." On Wednesday, I participated in the ALL IN conference in Montreal and am completely energized by the incredible enthusiasm for AI. Bringing together over 4000 AI enthusiasts and professionals from 40 countries with 50% AI providers and 50% current and future AI adopters. This event showcased Canada's concentration of talent — we're truly fortunate to have such a wealth of expertise in one place. The atmosphere was electric, reinforcing my belief in AI's transformative power as a catalyst for productivity and innovation. Discussions centered not just on technological advancements, but on the broader societal benefits AI can bring. I had the privilege of participating in the "Canada at the forefront of innovation" panel with Cam Linke, Elissa Strome, Valerie Pisano and moderated by David Skok. Key takeaways from my comments: 1. A new global AI race has begun and Canada must seize the opportunity to lead. 2. Our national data sets are envied worldwide - a crucial asset for startups and businesses. 3. Talent, compute, and data are key enablers for AI innovation. 4. AI institutes play a vital role in sourcing core talent and keeping skills current. 5. There's a real urgency to address productivity and AI offers great opportunities in this regard. 6. Canada has a unique chance to lead in AI Trust & Safety. My fellow panelists from Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute and CIFAR emphasized the need for faster AI commercialization, updating legislation, and reducing barriers to bring AI talent into organizations.
