BEEN THINKING A LOT ABOUT PIPELINES AND HEADLINES LATELY... Specifically, contemplating pipeline technology systems transition and pipeline history; how they're inextricably interconnected and why we're not better at using past performance to forecast trusted future change. Here's the context: the massive capacity expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline and its concomitant opportunity to open global markets for Canadian petroleum molecules is all the news of the moment. Trans Mountain's expansion is filling up, anticipating first molecular movement next month. But it was the original Trans Mountain, completed in 1953, that first helped crack the global markets nut. Yes indeed. Canada has sent oil to markets other than the United States before. For quite a few years, actually. The opportunity volume and scale differences with capacity expansion are, of course, substantive. But the point is about foundations. Without the first Trans Mountain foundation, there would be no expansion. Seems obvious. But arguably there would no Trans Mountain (the first) or other major pipelines without lessons learned during the Turner Valley oil boom, from 1914 to circa 1949. Indeed, the Turner Valley experience writ large, through three markedly different development phases, influenced much about how energy transition took root in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin many decades past. Royalite, an Imperial Oil subsidy, built the first gas pipeline from Turner Valley to Okotoks in 1921. There, it connected with an existing gas pipeline from Bow Island to Calgary. This new transportation utility kicked off a concerted reduction in the flaring practice of "waste" gas. A few years later, in 1925, an oil pipeline was built from "the Valley" to a refinery in Calgary as the hunt for higher value liquids continued. Barrels, tanker trucks and rail transport faded into the shadows. Market growth begat transportation system expansion and the various technology evolutions required to keep economics front and centre started evolving and transitioning. So too did environmental regulations. By 1942, when Turner Valley was producing 95 per cent of Canada's oil, a complex system of pipelines was growing in lockstep. And the focus on system integrity and safety moved in tandem. To the degree that pipelines have become the target of activist ire, as a sector, that's on us for not using our pre-existing transition history to build a compelling narrative. It's not too late as we move into an era of even more accelerated change and the role of pipelines in terms of energy security and stability is ever more critical. 100% concur with Diego Mandelbaum on this issue. A recurring problem is that policy makers have a blind spot on thermal energy. They wrongly assume that electricity policy is energy policy and vice versa. This myopia results not only in higher consumer costs but inferior capital deployment and deleterious environmental outcomes. We need to break the fever of “electrify everything” through ardent advocacy and education.

Canadian Natural Gas E&Ps, Midstreamers Focus on Demand Catalysts https://ift.tt/Uqt3gJG Natural gas exploration and production (E&P) firms and midstream companies in Canada expect to continue driving and delivering strong volumes of output. Their high expectations for demand growth outshined weak prices to begin 2024. Such was a prevailing theme of companies active in Western Canada’s natural gas complex during first quarter earnings season. The demand outlook – bolstered by LNG expansions and rising data center demand driven by artificial intelligence (AI) – largely mirrors the collective view of E&Ps in the United States. But, unlike the Lower 48, Canadian production remained on track for a record year in 2024 coming out of the first quarter. E&Ps are holding steady at elevated levels as the Shell plc-led liquefied natural gas export project in British Columbia (BC), LNG Canada, is targeting final commissioning this year. Tune in to NGI’s podcast to learn more.] RBN Energy LLC forecasted Canadian production growth in 2024 of 0.8 Bcf/d to an annual average of 18.8 Bcf/d, an all-time high. The total Canadian rig count stood at 114 as of mid-May, up from 85 a year earlier, according to Baker Hughes Co. In contrast, U.S. production this spring dropped from record levels around 107 Bcf/d in February to 97-98 Bcf/d in May, Wood Mackenzie estimates show.   Denver-based Ovintiv Inc. – which operates in the Montney Shale in Western Canada along with the Anadarko, Permian and Uinta basins – is a case in point. “Our Montney program remains robust in both BC and Alberta,” Gregory Givens, Ovintiv’s chief operating officer, said during the company’s recent earnings call. In its recent earnings report, Alberta’s Peyto Exploration & Development Corp., said it expects “weaker natural gas prices” would spill into the summer. However, “the significant buildout of LNG egress in Canada and the United States,” which is estimated to nearly double to about 25 Bcf/d by the end of the decade, “is supportive for a natural gas supply market to keep pace with future demand.” In addition to LNG Canada, five export projects are under construction along the U.S. Gulf Coast. “Additionally, increases in local industrial projects and the potential to supply power grids for data centers with a reliable and secure energy source is encouraging for the long-term future of natural gas prices,” Peyto’s management team said. Peyto is targeting 2024 capital spending of $450-500 million, “specifically designed with flexibility in the back half of the year. TL;DR—Call Blake Bixler to develop practical pipeline corrosion solutions leveraging your SMEs, but do so quickly to ensure your inclusion in the phase 1 pilot. Best case, your company will be an integrity industry leader; worst case you get a priorirized list of your assets. Also, don't worry about the time commitment on your SMEs; that's where I come in. ~~~ During my three years of service on The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee to study timely pipeline shutdowns in emergencies, which culminated in a published consensus report finding earlier this year, it became apparent to me that practical risk management solutions beyond POF and COF calculations need to be developed in the pipeline space to help operators make decisions to ensure the integrity of their assets. The challenge arises when operators across North America struggle to accurately process all available data and consider newly acquired data (and LOTS of it!) while leveraging subject matter expertise. I'm excited to hear what Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will present on October 23-24 in #Houston during their upcoming #Risk Modeling Methodologies workshop. Cenovus expects oil sands production to reach 600-610 Mbbls/d in 2024, with key assets including Christina Lake, Foster Creek, Lloydminster Thermals, and Sunrise. Operating costs have been reduced to $10.50 – $12.50 per barrel, reflecting a 12% decrease at the midpoint. Optimization projects, such as the Foster Creek expansion and the Narrows Lake tie-back, are expected to add significant production through 2024 and 2025. The company emphasizes cost leadership and efficiency, with further reductions in operational expenses. Patterson-UTI Energy (NASDAQ: PTEN) has seen a cut in its Q4 2024 earnings estimates from ATB Capital Markets, with the expectation now at a loss of $0.04 per share, down from a prior forecast of $0.01. Several equity analysts, including Barclays, Stifel Nicolaus, and others, have lowered their price targets for the company, but the stock still holds an average rating of "Moderate Buy" with a target price of $14.29. We could have picked any number of assets to reduce debt.” The Globe and Mail - September 10, 2024 The Siksika Nation was invited to participate in this monumental and historic transaction. Ultimately, based on the assessment of the opportunity and after careful consideration, the Nation determined that the TC Energy deal did not align with Nation values and priorities. For some of the communities, they have chosen to participate based on their own values and priorities and I applaud them for that. I’ve been asked about our participation many times over the last several weeks since the deal was announced – as many assumed we were one of the participating Indigenous communities. In some cases, we have been criticized and questioned as to why we have chosen not to.   Rather than get into the “why not”… I’d rather say this… following our spring Board meeting, SGC elected to focus its future growth centered around a theme of “building for the future”. We want to focus on opportunities to build generation, transmission, and energy storage infrastructure to support Alberta’s economy and population growth. We want to be involved in projects where our voice can be heard and we have the ability to actively participate as partners. We have chosen to focus our efforts on building for Alberta’s future and support projects that address future environmental and climate change issues.
